Clemson's ACC Tournament history, 1984-93 (4th decade).

1984: 8th of 8: 1st round loss to North Carolina 78-66, season record 14-14, 3-11 ACC.

1985: 6th of 8, 1st round loss to NC State 70-63, season record 16-13, 5-9 ACC. Clemson got an NIT invite, and lost in the 1st round to Chattanooga 67-65.

1986: 7th of 8, 1st round loss to Georgia Tech 79-61, season record 19-15, 3-11 ACC. Clemson again got an NIT invite, and made it to the quarterfinals, 1st round win over Middle Tennessee State 99-81, 2nd round win over Georgia 77-65, Quarterfinals loss to Wyoming 62-57.

1987: 2nd of 8: 1st round loss to Wake Forest 69-62, season record 25-6, 10-4 ACC. Clemson made the Big Dance, but was quickly bounced out of the Southeast Regional with a 1st round 65-60 loss to Southwest Missouri State.

1988: 7th of 8: 1st round loss to NC State 79-77, season record 14-15, 4-10 ACC. A 0.500 Clemson team got an NIT invite, losing in the first round to Southern Miss 74-69.

1989: 6th of 8: 1st round loss to Virginia 90-73, season record 19-11, 7-7 ACC. Clemson scored a Big Dance invite, and had a 1st round WIN in the West Regional over St. Mary's 83-70, before being routed in the 2nd round by Arizona, losing 94-68.

1990: 1st of 8: Clemson won the regular season ACC crown for the first time ever. 1st round WIN over Wake Forest 79-70, 2nd round loss to Virginia 69-66, season record 26-9, 10-4 ACC. Clemson made the Big Dance again for the 2nd year in a row, and barely squeaked by BYU in the first round in one of those infamous 5/12 matchups that have produced so many upsets over the years, winning 49-47. A 2nd round WIN over LaSalle 79-75, was then followed by probably the most infamous game in Clemson basketball history, a controversial Sweet Sixteen 71-70 loss to Connecticut. Tait Effing George and 1 second. And that's all I have to say about THAT, You Know?

1991: 7th of 7: 1st round loss to North Carolina 67-59, season record 11-17, 2-12 ACC.

1992: 9th of 9: 1st round loss to Maryland 81-75, season record 14-14, 4-12 ACC.

1993: 7th of 9: 1st round WIN over Florida State 87-75, 2nd round loss to Georgia Tech 69-61, season record 17-13, 5-11 ACC. Clemson received an NIT invite, with a 1st round WIN over Auburn 84-72 followed by a 2nd round loss to UAB 65-64.

By any measure, you would have to say this was Clemson's most successful decade of basketball to date.

we've won about 23 % of our ACC games in our conference history. The often low seeding shows some of why it has been a problem for us

being the worst team EVERY year. We act like averaging mid pack (over the last decade) is some travesty. We've never averaged mid pack before in this conference. So yes we have improved since Brownell has been here.

MAybe its the success in football that has bled over into the casual basketball fans' psyche and there's an expectation that somehow we're entitled to similar results for bball. I too would like to make the big dance on average but its clearly not the same day and age that I think we are all assuming it is.

Hopefully we all understand the plight of our situation. After the season we are 3rd in this conference and still are not good enough to make it. So we need to be pretty flawless to make it every year. If 3rd doesn't get you in then you're telling me we have to be dang near perfect to get in. I just don't see how that's something we as Clemson fans can rationally expect.
