Clemson fans and our Dads

How many of you are Clemson fans because your Dad was a fan? I would guess that the majority of us are Tiger fans because of our Fathers. If your Dad was not the main player in your love for Clemson who/what was the catalyst?

My 1st cousin steered me in the right direction. My parents had two boys and I was all Clemson and my brother went the other way, so they cheered for both teams…until I started Clemson.
My dad worked in Columbia, close to Williams Brice, and his coworker gave him so much grief over having a son at Clemson, that he became a Clemson fan and never cheered for the coots again.

My mom was going back and forth from Spartanburg to Clemson to get a master’s degree
She would pick me up at school and i would drive her to Godfrey hall then go hang out with older siblings of HS friends or go to the library and do homework then pick her up for the drive home. It saved her a lot of time not having to look for a parking spot
Spending so many Tuesday & Thursday evenings on campus made it the only place I applied
Dad went to school there and my next door neighbor took me to football games so I was a fan but all that time in Tiger Town clinched it for me

I was just 8 years old. I have vivid memories of walking around campus with him and listening to him tell stories.
Even then, I knew that Clemson was the place I wanted to be.

my life. He didn't attend college as he married soon after WWII and I came along about 10 months later. Since there was no TV coverage of Clemson sports to speak of until the late 60's or early 70's he didn't show a lot of partiality toward any schools that was evident. He insisted that I apply to Clemson and pretty much had to "force" me to go to college as I hated school and thought I would never darken the door of any educational institution after high school. (I really failed at that goal since I am beginning my 50th year working in public schools). He attended several football games with me while I was a student - guys in my dorm thought he was my brother when he came to my room his first game in 1965.

My dad was a Clemson grad. I ended up there too. And we got the third generation tiger moving in on 8/14.

Count me in...dad graduated in '64, PhD in Chemistry, lots of time spent in the old pre-reno version of Brackett Hall. Oddly I ended up working in the same rooms in 1992 down in the bottom floors when the ME Department took lab space there.
Lots of hand-me-down Tiger gear in our family, always left at Grandma's house in Andrews. I once snagged what must have been a 50-s era sweatshirt from one cousin in the pile there once, and wore it until it totally fell apart.

Dad's love for Clemson was certainly the catalyst for my love for everything Clemson. He started teaching me about football at an early age.

My father was a 1938 graduate and my grandfather was a 1909 graduate. My grandfather was one of the first recipients of the distinguished alumnus award. I have 3 older siblings and I was the only one who chose to go to Clemson. Yes, I was the favorite child!

Clemson. When Dad was growing up his family leaned garnet. Thankfully he had an older first cousin, Frank, a cadet at Clemson who Dad would frequently visit on weekends. Of course, he fell in love w/ Clemson and later passed that love on to me and my siblings. Dad's last game was the 2000 Clemson vs. Coot game, the Catch II, with me and my oldest daughter. It was perhaps the most memorable Clemson game for me and my then 8 yr. old ('14 grad).
Maybe some older fans remember Frank but don't know his name. He was a cheerleader at Clemson and later served in WWII. He was a bachelor who went to every home game and most away games. On game day you'd find Frank out in front of the stadium selling tickets. He was a skinny man with a head full of white hair. For the longest time, he was our sole source of tickets. Later in life, Frank moved back to Clemson, Clemson Downs, got a girlfriend, and continued going to games until he passed in 2009.
Thanks Dad (& Mom) for everything...miss you every day.

It’s all on my dad, class of ‘56. Along with God and family, Clemson was taught just like respect and manners…daily! I praise God that I was raised right and to love all things Clemson.

My Dad joined IPTAY in 1949 and always talked Clemson, but I really got hooked by my Uncle, a '52 Grad who took me to many games including my first at age 12. That would have been 65 years ago.

My Dad was at Clemson in the late 50's. He had to drop out during his Junior year because of family issues at home. He never pressured me to go to Clemson, but he let me know from an early age that Clemson was a special place for him and it meant a lot to him. I always wanted to go to Clemson, but I never realized how much it meant to my Dad until the day I walked across that stage at Littlejohn with that diploma in my hand. My Dad was not an emotional man, but when I found him after the graduation ceremony and I walked through the crowd and saw tears running down his face it hit me hard. That hug he gave is one of the memories that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. I appreciate the sacrifices that my parents made for myself and my siblings now as a parent myself.

It is somewhat odd how I became a Clemson fan.

I was born in Greenwood, SC. When I was very young, my grandparents gave me a Clemson beach towel while giving my brother a SCar beach towel. I didn't think too much about it because I was a kid and just remembered my Dad was a Redskins fan and would watch the games when they were on. Dad was an Erskine College graduate. And Mom was a Lander College graduate.
Then, in 1974, my family moved to Alabama. Of course, some families from church came to welcome us. A little girl from one of those families caught my eye, and her family were Alabama fans. We became boyfriend/girlfriend throughout middle school and through the start of high school. I wasn't really a college football fan, so I just cheered when her family cheered. However, a lot of my other friends were Auburn fans. So, I was wishy-washy concerning teams. My parents were able to take my brother and me to the Clemson-Alabama game in 1975 in Tuscaloosa. My parents wore Clemson gear. It was fun but Clemson got slaughtered. In 1982, my parents received a gift of Clemson National Championship Coca-Cola can six-pack. Those were stored in a cherished and protected area so that my brother and I wouldn't drink them.
While a junior in high school, my Dad was transferred back to Greenwood/Ninety Six, South Carolina. My brother was engaged, and Mom said she would keep me in Alabama until I finished high school. During my college considerations, she encouraged me to apply to Clemson. Unfortunately, we didn't get the application until the day before it was due. FedEx and fax machines weren't readily available at that time. I had already been accepted at Lander College in Greenwood. My parents encouraged me to attend Lander and then transfer to Clemson. So, it was settled.
I enrolled in the dual degree program Lander had with Clemson - math degree from Lander, engineering degree from Clemson. I arrived in Clemson in the summer of 1987. Mom and I went to a couple of Clemson home games that season. I was hooked! In 1989, I officially joined IPTAY, and my parents and I went to all of the home football games and the vast majority of home baseball games until 2020. Unfortunately, my Dad's health declined between 2020 and August 2022. He passed away in August 2022. During that time, my parents were not able to attend the football and baseball games.
So, looking back over my experience, my Mom probably influenced me most to be a Clemson fan. But, Dad was a less-vocal influencer, as well.

She is moving to a new smaller home in Greenwood near the Harris Plant. All of her friends are there in Ninety Six and Greenwood. And, she is still active at church and in Greenwood. I would prefer she move up here, but I am happy for her. The only down side to her new home is that her dog will not have a big yard to run around in.
We are looking at moving her at the end of August. For an 83 year old, she is handling all of the moving very well including scheduling the movers, getting some repairs on the detached garage/shop done, and yard work. She's a trooper. Hope I am as active as she is when I get to her age.

Thanks for the info - I know moving away from friends would've been hard. The neighborhood will miss her . Don't forget to try the Old Schoolhouse when you are down this way - menu is basically the same as Seasons By The Lake which closed if you ever went there. Think we are going there again tomorrow.

I grew up in Auburn and graduated from Auburn High School. My childhood family was as solidly Auburn as my present family is solidly Clemson. Started at Auburn in journalism and went a bit overboard with bongs, beer, babes and brothers (Allman). Spent a few itinerant years that were great fun, but accomplished little and landed in Charleston. Met my wife there and fell in love with Charleston and the woman who said she’d only marry me if I finished college. Decided civil engineering offered opportunities for interesting work and Clemson was the clearly the best instate choice. Her family was then 3rd-generation Clemson grads and we are now now pending 5th generation Tigers. And Admissions was much less selective then. We have now retired in Pickens County. Something in these hills.

Got my love for the outdoors from him. A lot of special moments in the woods and on the water that I greatly miss.
But my love for Clemson came from my dear mom and her dad. She's a die hard Tiger fan and my grandfather graduated from Clemson in 1938. He used to pick me up in Rock Hill on his way to Tiger Town from Florence for a game or 2 every year. Thats where it all started for me.
