Clemson enrolls record-breaking freshman class

CLEMSON — Clemson University is buzzing with activity this week as it welcomes its largest-ever freshman class that numbers more than 3,450 students.
Clemson received a record number of applications this year — 18,500 — and saw a 4 percent increase in yield, the percentage of accepted students who enroll.
“We have more students applying than ever before, more bright students applying than ever before, and these students have a number of educational options,” said Robert Barkley, director of admissions. “The swing in yield shows that these exceptional students realize the value of a Clemson education and the quality experience they’re going to receive here on campus.”
The unofficial average SAT score for the entering freshman class also sets a new record of 1245. Approximately 52 percent of entering freshmen were in the top 10 percent of their high school classes.
Another reason Clemson’s freshman class is so large is because of an increase in financial aid available.
“In addition to the generous state scholarships and federal grants that our students bring with them, Clemson provided an additional $8 million in scholarship support to this year’s incoming freshmen — an increase of over $3 million from the prior year,” said financial aid director Chuck Knepfle.
Approximately 95 percent of incoming freshmen from South Carolina receive either a Palmetto Fellows or LIFE Scholarship. On the average, in-state freshmen pay about 32 percent of the total cost of tuition.
Approximately 1,200 transfer students also are expected to enroll this fall, a slight increase from last year. One-third of those transfer students are coming from the Bridge to Clemson program at Tri-County Technical College.
Clemson is seeing an increase in the number of new students majoring in engineering: more than 1,100 freshman chose engineering majors, an increase of more than 50 percent over the past four years. That means that more than 30 percent of the freshman class this fall will be engineering majors, according to Randy Collins, associate dean of the College of Engineering and Science.
The trend applies to the graduate school as well. Total enrollment of master’s and doctoral students in engineering and science has risen by 50 percent in the past five years.
“The fact that so many students are choosing to major in engineering and the sciences is very promising for the future,” Collins said. “It means that Clemson will be educating even more engineers and scientists for the workforce of the state, region and nation.”

30 to 15 is better than 20 to 10....
The more engineering grads, the better. The engineering grads will always find a job PDQ after graduation.

is getting more and more recognition.
I'm an engineer myself and certainly understand the value of the disclipline, but I do hope we keep it more diverse. All degrees have their value - Business, science, liberal arts...well, everything but an African American Studies degree from UNC.
Also, that is a staggering increase in scholarship money. I guess that's a result of the Will to Lead campaign?

anytime I see numbers like this I wonder what is behind them given Barker's past antics for playing fast and loose with statistics. I just wonder what the real story is here. May be 100% legit but my lack of trust is due to his won behavior

Great to hear old Clemson is doing well. However I respectively disagree with the comment regarding the increase in Financial Aid. My daughter was accepted to Clemson and unfortunately we cannot afford the $40,000 a year in out of state tuition...the most financial aid we could muster was $8,000 a year. In addition, Clemson's Financial Aid office was the least helpful of all of the college's and universities we worked with, which was frustrating and disappointing. What's so sad about this is my daughter wanted to go to Clemson and she was devastated when we couldn't and wouldn't swing the excessive out of state tuition to my Alma Mater. The cost of education at Clemson is out of control...especially if you chose to live outside the State of SC.

4 years ago the magic number was 1300 and I think it's probably even gone up from there now. Tough score to make.

That's too bad, it's a great tool for luring talent from other states. A lot of my friends came because of that program and have stayed in South Carolina or at least the south even after graduation.

Actually, that is not the case anymore. It is shame that there are not scholarships for "border towns" like Charlotte, NC, etc. I am a native South Carolinian, and a proud Clemson graduate. However, I live 10 minutes from the SC state line in south Charlotte, NC and I am forced to pay out of state tuition for my HONOR student who scored 1360 on the SAT. It breaks my heart and my bank account to pay out of state but my blood runs orange. University of S.C. on the other hand recruited my son heavily, and offered a very large academic scholarship. Some say I am crazy to not have him go to USC, but I just couldn't do it. I think something needs to change. I tried talking to the recruiting office and financial aid and they don't really seem to have any answers. I am losing faith in my memory of my "small town" we are all about family school. It is has been a less than favorable experience for this alumni.

I recieved a 4 year full ride (actually I got excess $$$ which ended up going to beer usually) to go to Clemson, should I give my diploma back?
Now I actually got the same deal from USuC and would have had more money in my pocket if I attended there, but I wanted a real engineering degree so there wasn't much of a decision there.

Sorry for the bad experience. Clemson isn't for everyone, but thankfully there are several very good options in Georgia, right?

early 2000s before out of state got out of control. I won't force my kids to go anywhere, but I would love if Clemson were a viable option. I'd hate to restrict my kids' college experience to the state we live in at that time. The rate tuition is going everywhere, who knows if anyone can afford college in 18 years.
Although state schools should make educating in state kids a priority, there is value in a diverse student body and in graduates spreading across the nation and globe.
Being an engineer, it's great to see the program picking up steam. I hope it doesn't get diluted because it's difficult, and parents are unhappy to pay that kind of money to see their kids fail.

I agree 100%! I had the same experience with dealing with the Clemson officials. The other colleges that I spoke with went out of their way to be helpful and find solutions. I did not get that feeling at all from Clemson and wondered if it was just me. I have a strong love for my alma mater and quite frankly have been very disappointed. I know it is a big school that is very competitive, but the sparkle seems to be missing.
I on the other hand took a bullet and I am going to give my son a chance to go to Clemson, but things are going to be tight for our entire family. I was born in SC, my parents still live in SC, and I moved to Charlotte, NC which is less than 10 minutes from the SC state line. I wish they had some type of aid for dependents of alumni. We all want our children to have to same opportunities that we did and continue the tradition and our passion of CU with our children.

I really don't understand why people quote tuition numbers where they obviously are including room, board, books, etc when those costs are the same at any school they may attend. Certainly, they are costs that need to be paid and considered, but in terms of comparing two schools (in-state or out-of-state) they don't affect the differential - unless you are considering a very high cost area, like NYC or LA, to a low cost area.

Things have changed at Clemson since I was a freshman in 1989. If you were in the top 10 percent of your High School class you could get into the Honors Program. Now *most* Clemson students are in the top 10 percent.
