Clemson defense finishes No. 1 in ESPN metric

Clemson's defense closed out the regular season by moving up from No. 3 to No. 1 in the Football Power Index-based ESPN defensive efficiency rankings. That's ahead of Michigan, Penn State, Ohio State and Iowa in the Top 5. Florida State is the next ACC team at No. 9 and November foe Notre Dame is No. 10.

In the other two phases, special teams moved up five spots to No. 123 overall and the offense slipped from 64th to 72nd.

Overall, Clemson is rated as the 22nd-best team with all things considered, which is third-best in the league behind Florida State (10) and Louisville (19).

Considering we were about 50% on the season for field goals.... 123 isn't bad. Swanson really helped our numbers.

I know FG kicking is only about 1/4th of the special teams ranking. Weitz crushed it vs the Coots, but take in Gunn's misses vs Duke and the second game before we summoned him from Charleston, 123 ain't bad. And then makes you think..... how bad were the teams below us on special teams?

there is no dominant team in CFB this year, if only we had a competent offense...
