Facts about the portal

6

Oct 17, 2023, 11:44 PM

This is just such a clear path to success for Clemson. And it kills me to see such strictness from Dabo with it.

Michael Penix (Washington QB), Bo Nix, Keon Coleman, Jayden Daniels, and the list goes on and on of college players who have been able to reach their true potential because of the right system and coaches.

By restricting the portal, Clemson limits itself. The best things through Dabo’s career aside from wins on the field has been player development. You just see a different passion for Clemson in players in my opinion.

Clemson is 100% a dream school for hundreds of top high school and even current college players. If Clemson found a way to use this the right way, we would get too transfers from everywhere. And they would extremely help get us back.

Change is coming

…slowly but surely. Just like summer official visits. The need for a “slight change in approach” has been recognized for a while now….

nationally about its present form.

The NCAA should have left it in its original form, requiring the year sit out.

here's the flaw in these posts

Oct 18, 2023, 7:17 AM [ in reply to Change is coming ]

they are all based on assumptions.

Dabo does not like to use the portal- fact
Dabo refuses to use the portal- false
Free Agents in the portal would instantly enroll at Clemson if Dabo asked them- false

You think Spencer Ratller went to SCar to work with BETTER offensive coaches than Lincoln Riley?
You think he chose SCar over the other schools on his list because of Shane Beamer?
YOU think he chose Columbia because it is an awesome place to live?

I have always said Portal and NIL.
"NIL tampering" is the new norm.

Another fact about the portal. It is basically a way to acquire top players by outbidding other schools.

Guess as to why Dabo opposes it

3

Oct 18, 2023, 6:12 AM

Dabo is huge on culture. He built a family culture at Clemson and values character over talent. I'm only guessing here, but I believe the reason he is reluctant to bring in transfers is that he considers them to be less of a team player because they abandoned their original team - their original football family.

Obviously, we would benefit from recruiting and accepting transfers (especially at kicker). Dabo has always expected total commitment from players and recruits. If they took another visit after committing, he had a problem with that. I think he views it as kind of like going on a date with someone other than your wife.

He got us to the top with his commitment to character, values, and a family environment. I don't think he'll be quick to abandon the formula that changed Clemson culture and helped Clemson rise to the top - even as other schools embrace change and pass us by.

I'm not advocating one way or another. Just my two cents on what I believe his perspective is.

I agree Mr. Frog.

Dabo makes good decisions in Clemsons best interest.

Nobody is asking him to embrace change. There are just some of us that want him to accept it. There are plenty of kids in the portal that would fit right in with the Clemson culture. Not all of them are looking for a payday. Fact: Most of them aren't. How many of transfers has Clemson lost because they want to make money somewhere else? I can't think of any off hand.

Most young men are in the portal are

A: coming from a smaller or less successful school because they have exceeded recruiting expectations and want to upgrade programs, or

B: looking for playing time because they are stuck behind better players or there skills don't transfer well to the system that they are in.

Clemson would be a prime location for those in group A and we have a couple of positions where kids in group B would fit the bill. It's not a matter of trying to build the program through the portal. It is a matter of supplementing the roster where recruiting has left some gaps. Clemson will, hopefully, never be an Ole Miss or Colorado that built rosters through the portal. Things have gone terribly wrong and Dabo will no longer be around if we are. However, I would like to see Dabo accept change and find a player every now and then from the portal that is a productive member of the team.

Sometimes you have to do what the competition demands(even when you don't want to). There are plenty of high character kids in the portal and they fit right in. My guess is - after this year- Dabo will change his approach. IF he does- you will see Dabo be HIGHLY successful in his approach and get the kind of players that he wants(as usual).

Funny, you picked all the players who went to already pretty good teams and have been successful. Why did you not list the portal players that went to teams that have miserable teams and have not improved. Many on here do not seem to think that it is a double edged sword.

Re: Facts about the portal

My issue with the players that were listed would have been that Keon Coleman would have been the only one listed that is at a position that we would have been interested in. I do get tired of seeing QB's listed when we really have not been in the market for one.

If it is a double edged sword, are you saying this staff is not capable of evaluating the talent in the portal and making a judgement on who would improve the team? If we can evaluate high school recruits, why can't we evaluate the young men in the portal?

Yeah, "player development". Players have already been somewhere else. That's why they are in the portal. Smh

The DJ era and unforced errors are the reason we just missed the playoffs last year and have two losses this year.
