Chad Kelly has that drive but

Dec 19, 2013, 1:18 PM

sometimes it seems hes selfish. Everybody out there wants to be in the game. You dont hear about back up linemen going to the coaches whining and demanding playing time. I feel like hes a little selfish and maybe his head is too big. I hope hes not the type of guy who will throw his teamates under the bus if they make a mistake. theres a difference between being a leader and a brat. Cole has waited his turn and said nothing. I think hes a silver spoon and hes heard his whole life how good he is and he cant handle not being in the spotlight . Just my 2 cents.

Same ole story from the bowden days…

Dec 19, 2013, 1:23 PM

play the player who's done their time and waited their turn. It's BS.

I'm fine with Chad or Cole getting the job, but let one of them earn it. Don't try to justify awarding the job to Cole by saying that he's waited his turn… Why not give it to Donny McElveen? He's been waiting a long time too!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What Would Have Been Interesting ----

Dec 19, 2013, 1:28 PM

If some of our offensive linemen would have been
aggressively trying to get in games more.
I know each player has to earn it, but that
would have been a switch for the O-line.

Kelly definitely has more style, let's wait until spring practice to see who has the substance. I'm old school (and old, too) but I'll take substance over style anytime.

Re: Same ole story from the bowden days…

Dec 19, 2013, 6:03 PM

His running ability is pretty substantial.

And somehow, I don't think he'll have trouble completing all the screens and short hitches/timing routes we throw. The test will obviously be arm strength and accuracy on the bigger throws.

Let 'em compete!

Dec 19, 2013, 1:28 PM

Chad Kelly acts like nothing more than a spoiled little kid that's had everything handed to him his whole life and has had everybody tell him HOW GREAT he is from the time he could throw a football.

I personally am tired of listening to the dude cry. How many times Roderick McDowell go b!tching to the coaches about his playing time?

What about Spencer Shuey when he was riding pine?

Dude needs to shut up and let his play do the talking. If he's that good, he will emerge, if not, I hear North Greenville needs a QB.

about this very issue? Just because one instances gets made public doesn't mean they all do

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe they did, difference is we didn't hear about it.

Another just minor thing, but notice in the interview how he says, "me and him" referring to him being Coach Morris... Dude needs to show some respect.

http://www.orangeandwhite.com/news/2013/sep/04/hot-rod-mcdowells-patience-paying-road-greatness/

In high school, McDowell signed with Clemson as the No. 4 back in the nation and sixth-best prospect in the state per Rivals.

But through three years on campus, he had only 46 carries for 244 yards – just over 100 snaps – sitting behind C.J. Spiller, then Jamie Harper, Andre Ellington and his opportunity looked like it never was going to come. Going into his junior season, McDowell says he was upfront with the coaches about thoughts of transferring. They told him to be patient and his time was coming...and he trusted them.

Hot Rod has said many times this season during interviews

Dec 19, 2013, 1:45 PM [ in reply to Flame away if you must, but it seems more and more that ]

that he was all set to leave Clemson because of not getting playing time. He has said that his family and high school coach talked him down.

It seems to me that Kelly isn't saying he is going to leave but he is saying that he wants his chance to prove it on the field. He wants to let his play do the talking.

I may be wrong about Kelly, but he deserves everyone sitting back and waiting to see.

Dwayne Allen had a similar situation and his outspoken nature ended up making him a great leader on the team because he wasn't afraid to say what needed to be said.

McDowell almost transferred for lack of playing time until the coaches assured him that his time was coming.

Just so you know, not that McDowell or Kelly care what you think.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

At least he took it to the coaches. I don't recall him ...

Dec 19, 2013, 5:57 PM [ in reply to Flame away if you must, but it seems more and more that ]

crying to the media before. He should have been put in early in the second half against FSU. He wasn't imo because Dabo didn't want to embarrass Tajh. More Bowdens disease if you ask me. Would Chad have necessarily played better? No way to know but you don't let a team and program suffer out of misguided loyalty.

I don't think he needs to be coddled to. However, I don't think there is anything wrong with a young player being willing to step forward and communicate his situation with his coaches. I would actually consider that a sign of maturity. (much more so than his rap videos)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Fine line between Arrogance & Confidence

Dec 19, 2013, 1:54 PM

Your QB has to have confidence in high supply, sometimes people don't like that and call it arrogance.

I know one thing, Swag Kelly believes 110% that he will lead Clemson to a Championship and that is 90% of the battle. He may have inherited a little swagger that people may wine about but I guarantee you he inherited an undeniable faith in his ability and absolute determination to get it done as well.

Jim Kelly was a baller, if he has any of that in him we are in very good hands and he can Swag all he wants in my book baby.

Can't wait until he Swags all over Chief Oceola's Stupid face paint.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Respectfully disagree...

Dec 19, 2013, 3:33 PM

It's not arrogance if you can back it up we'll see very soon which of these apply to Mr. Kelly.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hopefully the result of all this is a cut-throat competition

Dec 19, 2013, 2:39 PM

for QB all through spring, summer, fall camp, and into the season. Nothing brings out the very best in someone than a highly competitive environment, and it looks like that's what we're going to have on our hands this coming season. May the best man win.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I sort of like it.

Dec 19, 2013, 2:59 PM

Sometimes you need a guy who will say, "you need to get your head out of your #### and make a play!" not "you'll get it next time." Now some people respect that (me) and others don't. At the same time though he has to support and stand up for his players on and off the field, and I think Kelly would do just that. My 2 cents.....whoever is better gets to start, thats how it was in my day. Everybody in this generation seems like they are entitled to something just because they have been there longer. Everybody gets a trophy, and everybody gets to play. No....you earn your spot and if you get the MVP, then you get a trophy! Otherwise sit on the bench and work harder to get there. rant over, and that last part was just about sports nowadays in general. not Kelly or Stoudt lol

Dec 19, 2013, 3:38 PM

Hard to blame a 19 year old who is a hard core footballer for being frustrated. He strikes me as immature for his age, so that explains how he comes off as selfish I think.

What's interesting is how the 2 coaches not only got his head right in less than a couple of hours, but how they energized him. He seems big time psyched to compete in the spring.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Chad Kelly has that drive but

Dec 19, 2013, 3:54 PM

Kelly isn't selfish, instead he knows what he can do can help clemson. The kid is a gamer and honestly clemson is in need of gamers.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Stoudt is better

Dec 19, 2013, 4:00 PM

That could be the reason Kelly is complaining-- because he's genuinely concerned about his chances of starting next year. Regardless, why are you going to the coaches frustrated? You have all spring to prove you're the guy.

Re: He knows he can do it and

Dec 19, 2013, 6:10 PM

Can't say I'm bothered by it at all.

He knows he can win, and like someone else said earlier in the thread, that's half the battle right there.

Unbridled confidence in your abilities is never a bad thing as long as you're being a team player.

I don't see anyway he doesn't shine when his time comes.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree and that attitude will infect the whole team***
