CFP and Notre Dame. I have never understood how much

clout Notre Dame has. All conversations, and votes, about the format for the 12 team CFP starting next year include the Commissioner of all the major conferences and Notre Dames Athletic Director. Listen to me…the Athletic Directors vote for ONE school is equal the SEC and Big Ten Commissioner vote. Both conferences have 14 teams each. Notre Dame is not the Notre Dame it used to be. To wit, we beat them this year when we were down. However, their Athletic Director has more esteem than the AD’s at Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, Georgia, LSU, Penn T, FSU, etc. Makes no sense. It evokes the old question of “does Notre Dame have pictures?”

I may be missing something I should know and I welcome responses.

Nothing but history. That's what they go on. Just like preseason rankings. They rank on what teams did the previous year.

…but they aren’t really swaying anything in their own favor. They agreed to the current model which means they can NEVER get a first round bye. They could be 12-0, win every game by 30 points, and be unanimous #1 in every poll.

Their best seed in CFP would still be 5.

I thought it was renamed after we beat them 30-3 in the Cotton Bowl to Field Goal Jesus.

Actually, a couple of our friends have made good points:

it's their history.

Years ago, I asked my Dad why he thought ND was held in such esteem. He remarked that for years the Irish football games were the primary ones heard over the radio, and most people listened and became familiar with the history. Dad was raised in Roanoke, Virginia, and though VMI and VT (called VPI in those days) were popular, local schools, Notre Dame was considered the national brand.

Even today, crowds will fill stadiums to see their teams take on the Irish despite their current records. We read all the chatter right here on TNet about our games with them, considering our wins great victories. Just say the name: Notre Dame...The Fighting Irish, and it brings to memories the Four Horsemen, Knute Rockne, Ara Parseghian, Frank Leahy, even Lou Holtz.

Oddly enough, in the early days of football, Harvard, Princeton and Yale set the standards, dominating the sport. One of the greatest players of all in those days, "Pudge" Heffelfinger of Yale (actually a member of my family) was a household name nationally, recognized as the first paid pro player after he left Yale. But the Ivies eventually chose a different (and perhaps, the smartest) path, opting out of bowls or title chases. So, we revert back to the Irish and their storied past.

Personally, I don't think they should have a special seat, but I understand why. And I don't believe it a bad idea to celebrate some of the old traditions of our favorite sport, especially now that college football is on a path far, far different than most of us old-timers could have ever imagined!

the fact that they played games in Yankee Stadium says it all... Notre Dame was at the core of the first ever huge push to publicize college football

they have the biggest footprint of any program

*** not to mention Notre Dame its near Chicago ( the topish journalism program is Northwestern , which isnljcared near Chicago as well) ... and Notre Dame is near University of Michigan . they really know how to market football around there

Notre Dame is Catholic and the priest probably would not administer last rites if you did not root for ND...they did not really break into football early...the Ivies did but the first of the commoners was Michigan...they busted through in a big way...most colleges at the time were football clubs on campus...Yale actually had 3 club teams...kinda like the stuff that went on at Oxford & Cambridge etc, southern schools did not catch on till later...we were still trying to get over the war of Northern aggression!

ND has more followers than any SEC, B1G, Big 12, Pac or ACC team.

ND has more followers than any of those conferences too. Before you go nuts:

Everybody keeps up with ND. 5-8% of those eyes upon ND are pulling for a WIN. The other 92-95% hate ND will the furry of a hungry Great White Shark and hope ND dies and serves eternity in the fires of ####.

I'm one of the high percentage group. I hate ND above even USCe. ND has been at the top of my most hated list for 60+ years.

Don't ask me why! No I didn't apply for ND. I'd apply for a job wiping the devil's butt first.

College football is a business.

A lot of people watch Notre Dame football on TV. More than watch Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, Georgia, LSU, Penn T, FSU, etc.

Combination of History and large fan base.

Speaking as a Clemson fan who has lived among many Domers...

Historically ND football is a big deal - 7 Heisman winners, 11 National Championships (7 before 1950, last in 1988). Recently? 2 first round CFP appearances (losses) and the Bama BCS game in 2012.

Equally (or more) important, they have a large and national fan base. Waaaaay back in the day, when going to college wasn't as common, many US Catholics (esp Irish Catholics) took great pride in ND, even if they had no actual affiliation with the school. So just like many non matriculating South Carolinians were proud of Clemson or USC (yuck!) and became automatic fans, the Catholics were ND fans. And there were many more Catholics than South Carolinians. Part of the ND lore is their "subway alumni", un-affiliated fans who would hop on the subway to attend ND games. Additionally, ND played a national schedule. They have been making road trips to California for forever. As a private school they also have a very a national student body. And the cherry on top? Due to that national fan base NDs games have been widely shown on TV across the country, making it easier for them to add new fans. Back in the late 80s/90s the only way to watch Clemson games in the midwest was to go to a sportsbar that had a satelite dish. Folks all across the US could tune into to ND at home most every week. Even today when you can watch just about any game from the comfort of your couch, you can watch all the ND home games at home for free, on NBC.

But why they get such preferential treatment? It is absolutely ridiculous, as is the stupid deal the ACC gifted them. I guess it's because they are the last big independent and they are too big to fail.
