CBS Sports says the Big 10 is discussing 9 and 10 game

Jan 29, 2013, 9:42 AM

conference schedules. One of the reasons is to provide more content for its Big 10 Network.

In my opinion, this would impact the ACC in one of two or both ways. One, the ACC may revisit the 9-game conference schedule idea. 2. Even if the ACC stays at 8 games, if the Big 10 goes to 9, other conferences will too. That means fewer attractive out-of-conference game possibilities. And since Strength Of Schedule will be a factor when picking playoff teams, that will put ACC teams at a further (current perception of ACC)disadvantage.

That's why they're wanting to partner with the ACC for games

Jan 29, 2013, 9:48 AM

If they can work out a deal between the 2, where ACC teams will play BIG 12 teams, they'll stay at 8 conference games. This deal(along with extra TV/Bowl deals) could stop the 9 game conference talk. If not, most conferences(those that survive) will just go to 16 teams and play 10 conference games.

This is why the Big 12 among others is discussing ...

cross-conference partnerships which would enable the leagues to stay at 8 regular season conference games and still schedule some quality out of conference opponents as well.

I would like to point out for all the folks who like to panic about the money gap between the ACC and other conferences that the Big 10 would only be considering this if preliminary discussions about renegotiating their Big 10 network contract weren't going as expected. Amazingly every Sat/Cable provider in America didn't crap their pants with the announcement of Rutgers and Maryland joining the Big 10 and just magically start throwing money at them. So, they have to build actual value by creating more product.

So...they want to stick to a total creampuff schedule?

Jan 29, 2013, 9:57 AM

reminds me of their undying love for the Rose Bowl. They'd rather have tradition than respect.

Sounds like some Clemson fans....

who are adamant about staying in the ACC primarily because of the historical rivalries and the convenience.

My opinion has always been

Jan 29, 2013, 10:04 AM

Go to the game that gives you the best chance to earn respect. I had an all out war with an Ohio State fan years ago on a message board over their Rose Bowl fetish. I basically said you'd rather play #22 UCLA in the rose than play #4 UGa in the Sugar? (lets say hypothetically OSU was #9) He said "Yes, its the Rose Bowl!" I replied "Yes and you are a P***y".

I wholeheartedly agree....

I have relatives who are Ohio State alums and I tell them the same thing all the time but it generally falls on deaf ears.

Collectively I have NEVER come across a more arrogant

fan base. I have OSU relatives too. They are bad whether they are good or whether they suck.

A 9 game conference schedule would be disastrous for the ACC. We dont have the big football brands right now to do it due to Swoffords complete fail of not taking WVU in. If we got WVU instead of Syracuse i would call it a no brainer to go 9.

At the same time we would lose a home game every other year if the conference went to 9 (with our rival already taking up one spot)

'provide more content for its Big10 Network': I'll bet Frank

I thought we were planning a 9 game conference schedule?

Jan 29, 2013, 10:38 AM

Somebody fill me in.

They scrapped that

and went to the 8 game. That moment of brilliance by our conference leader is what cost us to cancel games with OLe Miss and Ok State. We are STILL scrambling to get those back.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I didn't like the idea of losing a home game ...

Jan 29, 2013, 10:42 AM

every other year.

Swofford is so reactive. That's the mark of a follower not a leader.

Only the Big 10 Network is dumb enough to show MD/Rutgers

Jan 29, 2013, 10:45 AM

Or Rutgers/Indiana etc etc etc.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

or Duke/NC or Duke/Wake or BC/Wake or VA/Duke***

That will make it harder for Notre Dame to schedule games

Jan 29, 2013, 11:29 AM

against teams from The Big 10.

Along with a Big 12/ACC scheduling arrangement this makes it more likely that Notre Dame will go full membership in the ACC.

Chips are falling into place.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My thoughts exactly....

Jan 29, 2013, 12:34 PM

Well...all but the "chips are falling in place" part.
