Can Clemson Avoid Decline like so many great programs?

Sep 6, 2021, 10:28 AM

When Dabo brought in Chad Morris and got ahead on the HUHN, it totally changed the program. Now it seems to have been figured out by elite defenses.

Nick Saban saw his smash mouth style of offense was antiquated and hired Lane Kiffen to modernize it and Bama seems stronger than Ever.

FSU had a major decline because for decades under Bowden, they could literally "out-athlete" it's competition and win 10+ games until better athletes and coached popped up in the ACC. Yes, Jimbo had a good run but he couldn't get the financial support yo upgrade facilities, pay coaches better and he left and FSU hired Willie Taggart. They'll be clawing their way back for at least another 5 years.

Clemson will continue out-athlete its competition until we mix it up with another elite program.

I saw a lot of transfers making plays around the league...Many were former Clemson players which is a huge RED FLAD.

Can Tony Elliot fix the Offense? I'm not for firing him but he needs to show the ability to adapt or Dabo need to get into his resume pile and have some people in mind. Elliot's support definitely needs to have a shelf life.

Can Dabo change his views on transfers and the JUCO Route? Mastering this wrinkle I think is going to be a game changer.

Dabo needs to work the businesses for big NIL deals for 5-stars. A car dealer in Ohio is giving new cars and trucks to players like cheese and crackers. Can Clemson keep up with Jones's?

What else needs to be addressed with these new changes to the game that Clemson needs to master? Everything is still about recruiting the best players.

I don't think the issue is transfer portal or Juco. That fundamentally changes the orientation of the program. Dabo commits to the players and that's our thing. We are not a factory.

HOWEVER, Dabo does need to rethink his coaching philosophy. Skeletor has shown he can evolve. The Offense has not. Loyalty is one thing. And i get it. But loyalty can be your downfall. People get comfortable BECAUSE you're loyal and they take advantage of that.

I know we all say people have asked TE to be a HC, but do we seriously think that? BV absolutely. TE? I don't get the sense they do. He's become stale and predicatable. He isn't inspiring innovation and drive within the offensive side of the ball...instead depends on 50/50 balls and great QB play.

Now the chips are down. How do you respond? And from what we've seen in the past two games is it isn't much. He doesn't have the answers and the ACC schedule doesn't force him too. The pressure isn't there anymore.

We are complacent and need a fire. Dabo did it once with Chad and Brent ...but can he do it again? I honestly don't think he can.

Even Nick Saban picked up players in the portal. I'm not saying depend on the portal but if a quality player is available at a position that has a need, it she be considered.

I agree. Here's the problem. We have a high probability of being 11-1 and by the end of the season the Tiger Nation will have forgotten this loss and we will see where we really are in the Playoffs of whatever Bowl we end up.

Yes but Saban's philosophy is about winning and putting you in the league. OSU is about coaching up and putting you in the league. Dabo's is creating well rounded men.

I love that we have that culture for our players. That Dabo can honestly looking momma and dad in the eye and tell them their son is going to leave a better man with a degree and a shot at the league.

I think this is what makes Clemson special. But to continue this, Dabo has to

1) evolve his NIL approach. We need to figure out how to get our players sponsored on a continual base. Clemson overall is at a huge disadvantage here

2) evolve his coaching philosophy, which he definitely has not. This is the easier to fix and is long overdo.

Evolve or die

Agree but the best players folded on offense against GA.

DJ was terrible and the offense never got in rhythm.

You can't fix calling plays. Nor creativity same ole plays

BTW Jeff Scott called the pass to Renfrow that won the natty just saying.

Slant pass and throw deep 50/50 ball. That is unacceptable for

an OC that is not creative and been exposed.

Wait throw to WR behind line of scrimmage and lose yards.

Agree 100%. The times have changed.

We must adapt if we hope to stay among the elites.

Dabo has somewhat lost the narrative culture-wise and yes, elite defenses have figured out how to counter what we've been doing offensively.

The NIL thing scares me the most. I agree 100% with your points.

I would submit it’s already started. Our last 4 or 5 big games we have been outplayed and outcoached. Still better than we were before 2015 or so but can’t deny decline

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Need a new OC and OL coach like next year.

Sep 6, 2021, 11:20 AM

There is a reason nobody wants TE as a head coach even after Clemson winning 2 championships…an no, it’s not because he wouldn’t interview during the season.

Is UGA’s program in decline too? Because their offense did little better than our offense

Sep 6, 2021, 11:20 AM

And their QB was a highly recruited player from a big HS program in California.

We had 180 yards, they had 250 yards.

The difference was a pick six.

That UGA team is one of the top 4 in the country. We played them, they were better, we lost.

I would not bet against us if we played them again.
