Calling the game....

May 16, 2015, 9:13 PM

....I have noticed that a lot of the games I went to at home this year that the pitching coach (Pep) was calling the pitches (all) from the dugout into Okey. Now the last 3 games I noticed no signals from Pep to Okey (I was watching from my computer so I could have missed something). Was Okey calling the game himself along with what the pitcher wanted to throw ? Correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks

Go Tigers........

started this season after the Wake Forest series

Last Saturday, Clemson’s pitching staff gave up six earned runs in a 7-3 loss to Wake Forest, prompting an uncommon and effective change to how the Tigers are handling pitchers.

For the last four games, pitching coach Dan Pepicelli has not been calling pitches from the dugout; he’s turned over those duties to sophomore catcher Chris Okey.

“Coach Pep has done a great job calling pitches most of the year, but since we’ve had some struggles he kind of let Okey call some pitches,” said junior lefty Matthew Crownover, who benefited from this move when he allowed no earned runs through seven innings in Friday’s 5-2 win over North Carolina. “When you call pitches you’ve got to stay in the game. Even when (Okey) makes an out when he hits, he’s got to be ready to go calling pitches; he can’t go on autopilot.”

Clemson coach Jack Leggett said Friday that it’s a “triangle” effort. Pepicelli builds a game plan, meets with his players and let’s Okey and the pitchers execute it, something most programs at the collegiate level don’t do.

Awesome! Like the conductor of a symphony orchestra, a coach might direct the tempo, timing and "pitch" of his team, but otherwise trust and never doubt the musical aptitude and skill of its members. I mean, they were auditioned and hand-picked in the first place for exactly that purpose, weren't they? Great job (lately), JL - Go Tigers!

coaches have spreadsheets of what batters have as tendencies, but mostly, these kids have been playing ball at their positions since little league. Just let the catcher and pitcher work it out.

That was a great pickup. I remember when scooter shared it with the board. I had not read the article and was unaware. I do know that someone is spending some serious time scouting and discussing strategy (I think this is one of the reasons we've been good against good teams). Sean's analogy of a conductor was spot on. I hope the move will also prevent teams from stealing our signs (now they almost need a runner on 2nd to do it).

I was at our Oregon regional game last year at Vandy. Crownover cruised through the first inning with 3 K's. The lead off hitter struck out.
The 2nd hitter singled/stole 2nd/advanced to 3rd on Matthew's throwing error.
Matthew was cool as a cucumber after making that error.
Matthew struck out the 3 and 4 hitter to end the 1st with no damage.
The reality was that game was over at that point however because oregon picked up our signs.
They knew what was coming and where it was coming and they absolutely shelled us. Since I'm from the Chattanooga area, I have seen Matthew pitch many games on a high school level, with Team USA, and with Clemson. He has never been hit like that (even when he didnt have his "good stuff").
