Building to something great

Dec 29, 2014, 10:56 PM

This team just proved that Dabo's vision of Clemson is for real legit. This was a "rebuilding" year for us, and we got 10 wins. We could have easily won our conference but not for a couple plays, and we beat another high-profile team in our bowl game. Dabo and Clemson have been the butt of many jokes over the past several years, but I promise you that nobody is laughing anymore. We will be a legitimate playoff contender going into next season.
I remember when Dabo took over thinking that this was not the guy to take us to the top. I can't believe how wrong I was. We just demolished an Oklahoma team that looked like a national champ team at the beginning of the year. I know it was a disappointing season for them, but this is still a quality win, especially when put in juxtaposition to bowl wins over LSU and Ohio State the past two seasons. Not only does that speak to the level of talent of our players but also the ability of our coaches to develop and execute a gameplan. Dabo has made excellent hires in all his assistants and has built a staff that will sustain a high level of continuity despite its potential to groom future head coaches. He hires Clemson grads that want t be here and promotes within the program. You have to believe that his staff loves working for Dabo. Coach Scott and Coach Elliot called an excellent game tonight, and Coach Venables vindicated all the talk of having the #1 defense in statistics only. And you can't say enough about Coach Streeter. Does anybody here think Stoudt would have played the game he did without Coach Streeter's guidance?
Moreover, Dabo proved tonight that his success was not simply the product of having Tajh Boyd, Sammy Watkins, et al. to make him look good. We are loaded with talent all over the field. Many of these players were projects (Beasley, Jarret) that will be playing in the NFL next season. That has to look really good to recruits. The coaches have been able to take 3* players and make them perform like 5*s. If I'm a 5* recruit, I'm thinking that these coaches will help me develop and realize my full potential. Dabo is bringing in a top 5 recruiting class next season, and it's going to be the first of many incredible classes we sign. More and more recruits are paying attention to us across the country. Clemson already has a lot to sell these kids on, but results speak for themselves. It will hurt next year to lose our seniors, particularly on defense, but in all honesty the next kids up are a notch above in terms of natural talent. The coaches will have them ready, and I don't see much of a dropoff from this year to next. That's a trend that is going to continue. We'll just continue to reload.
I remember the days when 8-9 wins was as good as you could expect. Ten wins was major cause for celebration. We've hit 4 years in a row with 10 wins. Clemson will be playing for championships sooner rather than later. Dabo has made good on his word to be All In and make the most of his opportunity. He's taken us far, and he's just getting started. It's been a joy to watch him learn how to be a head coach. He's got the team playing at a high level, consistently brings in top-10 recruiting classes, and has the athletic department giving him anything he wants. No wonder he was rated the #4 most powerful coach. And what's more is he's done it while holding himself, his staff, and his players to a high standard of integrity and class. That's the most impressive part to me. I've always been proud to be a Clemson fan, but I feel blessed now to be witness to this era of our program. It's been a long time coming. Coach Swinney deserves our gratitude. He hasn't done it on his own, but he's made it all happen.
