Bridge the revenue gap.

18

Jul 25, 2023, 3:39 PM

I'm confused. The commissioner said that the ACC couldn't equal the revenue of the SEC and B1G but it was looking for ways to "bridge the gap."

Isn't that exactly what "bridge the gap" means?

There is a gorge. ACC is on one side of the gorge and SEC is on the other side of of the gorge. There is a gap between them. The purpose of a bridge is to allow you to go from one side to the other. A bridge that only goes halfway isn't a bridge. It is a pier at best. It is a disaster at worst.

Isn't the commissioner talking about "narrow the gap"? Did he use "bridge" inadvertently or intentionally?

It is just empty rhetoric. A bridge can be built to connect two completely different places. Like the Acc- SEC. It doesn't equate to them becoming equal.

I'd prefer he say " level the playing field ".
But of course he can't say this because it's
obviously disingenuous at best.

Maybe he envisions half a bridge as a ramp, and if we hit it fast enough.....never mind. I'm having "Evel Knievel over the grand canyon" flashbacks.

Sure doesn't come across as a strong leader that people will get behind anytime he talks. No plans or ideas shared on how this gap will be "bridged". Could have teams hold car washes or sell Krispy Kreme donuts as fundraisers.

While I am not a fan of the commish, do you really think he should put all his cards on the table while negotiating various options? If so your understanding of how business works is incomplete.

If he has cards he should show one or two to back up his gab. If he don't have nothing to show then he probably has nothing but gab.

Jul 25, 2023, 5:19 PM [ in reply to Re: Bridge the revenue gap. ]

Not saying to show all the cards, but this has been going on for months with no singles or doubles to show so to speak. Incremental steps are nice but talk to a plan (withhold details if you will), but to get up and talk in circles without saying anything is pointless.

We see how well the so called "Alliance" worked with the other 2 conferences.

Great examples of a single or double show live sports on the ACC network - ie spring games in a proper window block or regular season games: the schedule of 11am 2pm 5pm and 8pm games does not work when games last ~3:30 hours.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He doesn’t need to show “all of his cards”

Jul 25, 2023, 5:46 PM [ in reply to Re: Bridge the revenue gap. ]

But he better actually have a slight inclination of what will help “bridge the gap” because right now as he’s smiling and talking in front of a camera there’s multiple schools talking to other conferences trying to figure out how to end the ACC as a football conference.

I have thought of this too. More specifically I've wondered just how sustainable is ESPN with its plethora generous contracts.

Crazy money is getting thrown around anymore. What's the world going to look like when college football market share and revenue goes through a correction? I don't see how it can keep going like it has been... so many variables. Would being then in a larger conference be better or worse?

Jul 25, 2023, 6:07 PM

... I am surprised no one called him on it. I was expecting someone, at some point during the day to ask him, "You talked about bridging the revenue gap. But, didn't you admit that there is no way to bridge the gap? Aren't you just exploring the ways to narrow the gap? The gap will soon be 40 million dollars wide. Do you have a goal on how narrow you can make tat? 35 million? 25 million? 15 million?"

Maybe someone will ask him tomorrow.

Clemson or the ACC jumps the revenue gap by making a win-win deal with Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisel, Saudi Arabia's Minister of Sports and President of the Union of Arab National Olympic Commitees. The NCAA and Congress would investigate and do 00
