Don't get all of the baseball hate

Mar 24, 2013, 3:38 PM

We lost one game, and finished the week 4-1. We have lost only two series this year, both times to top 20 teams, and neither time did we get swept. I understand animosity towards our recruiting, Jack has to start looking in other places than Vermont, but other than that, what is it? I don't get how we have people still standing up for Brad Brownell after losing 10 of our last 11, but Jack doesn't make the world series and he gets the pitchfork mob? As a fan of Clemson sports, and the University, I am truly wondering about where all of this worry comes from.

No power in the lineup. Just a bunch of slap hitters.
Terrible fundamentals on defense.
Shaky pitching.
Bad coaching decisions.
We still have some strong teams to play in conference, and we're going to be lucky to beat them.

Not seeing this one, either. Goose is legit ace material. Schmidt is going to be a great one. Schnell too. Campbell is having a rough stretch, but it's only a matter of time before he returns to form. That kid who came in and relieved Schmidt after he struggled is solid too.

But keep thinking the cupboard is bare.

Re: Don't get all of the baseball hate

Mar 24, 2013, 4:37 PM

Not standing up for Brownell, but for you to justify your stance on baseball because of a 4-1 record against Morehouse and Duke is not really helping your cause.

The problem with the baseball program has been going on for years. CU basketball and baseball are two entirely different animals. Our baseball program should be elite every season. Bill built a power and Jack took that power over. We have never been a power in basketball (although I hope we are someday...we are not now)

Comparing basketball to our baseball program is not very accurate.

Twenty six of the 34 players on the roster...

Mar 24, 2013, 4:54 PM

are from NC, SC, GA and Florida. I don't understand why people think the baseball team is full of Yankees. There's 2 from Virginia, one from VT, one from CT, one from NY, one from NJ (who's dad happens to be the head coach at Princeton), one from IL, one from CA and one from MO. Is that really so horrible? Some people claim (erroneously) that Clemson has somehow "backslid" or that coach Leggett "took a 4 year vacation", neither of which is true. Other teams have caught with Clemson because they've invested in facilities and Clemson hasn't. While Doug Kingsmore isn't terrible, it also isn't even in the top 20 facilities in the country when the entire place is taken into account.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We need more to recruit the Dominican Republic much, MUCH

Mar 24, 2013, 5:20 PM

harder than we currently do. If we could lock down latin america, I think we'd do better. Recruiting from NC, SC, GA, and Fla is just not cutting it.

I would definitely put DK in my top 15. When it comes to the overall facility. Our player amenities suck, but everything else is pretty nice. Most would agree that DK is at the very least a top 15 facility.

1. LSU (Alex Box Stadium)
2. Scar (Carolina Stadium)
3. Arkansas (Baum Stadium)
4. FSU (#### Howser)
5. Texas (Disch Falk)
6. Penn St. (Lubrano Park)
7. TAMU (Olson Field)
8. UNC (Boschamer)
9. Texas Tech (Dan Law Field)
10. Clemson (Doug Kingsmore)
11. Ole Miss (Swayze Field)
12. Oregon (PK Park) - small, new, and very nice
13. Auburn (Plainsman Park)

14. Vandy
15. TCU

After you get to 15 it is really just personal preference. I know that Clemson may not have the best players lounge or box seats just yet, but it is highly regarded as one of the best.

Lets say it is a top 20 facility. Still no excuse for the level we recruited at for years baseballfan. Our recruiting looks good for this upcoming year and it did last season as well. Hope that remains consistent under Lecroy.

Player amenities are part of it...

Mar 24, 2013, 5:26 PM [ in reply to Re: Twenty six of the 34 players on the roster... ]

and Virginia is ahead of Clemson. Georgia Tech and Miami might also be ahead of Clemson. I would venture to guess that Southern Cal and Stanford are ahead of Clemson. Louisville is very nice.

Re: Player amenities are part of it...

Mar 24, 2013, 5:33 PM

I disagree with UVA, GT, and Miami being ahead of CU. Your putting too much weight on the player amenities. I have been to UVA and GT (not the new Miami).

It really is personal preference when you start arguing that. I completely agree with you that we need to revamp DK, but I am not willing to put all of our recruiting woes on a facility as highly regarded as DK.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Player amenities are what the players see...

Mar 24, 2013, 5:38 PM

and what brings in the recruits. Just ask Dabo Swinney how much player amenities mean. Player facilities matter more than fan facilities do. Go to Virginia's website and look at their player facilities. I've been to GT, even though it was several years ago and I like the fact that you can buy something at the concession stand without missing any of the game since there is one that faces the field. Of the "fan facilities", that and the lack of a cover are my biggest concerns. I'd like to cover more of the seating area, but doing that without blocking peoples' view with poles would be a challenge.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Player amenities are what the players see...

Mar 24, 2013, 5:45 PM

Players also want to play in front of a great fan base. It is a mix of both. I would say that UVA and GT both have better player amenities, but not overall facilities.

I am looking forward to what is to come of DK in the very near future.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

A lot of recruiting is done...

Mar 24, 2013, 5:48 PM

without fans in the stands, especially during the fall. I read an article on Baseball America a while back about Virginia's facilities and one of the players said, essentially "Look around at all of this. Why WOULDN'T you want to play here" when gesturing to the locker room and lounge area.

I've seen pictures of Virginia's player facilities...

Mar 24, 2013, 6:03 PM

just like I've seen pictures of Clemson's and Virginia's are WAY ahead of Clemson's. I have not seen anything of the others, which is why I said that I would imagine that the others are ahead of Clemson. I've been to North Carolina and Georgia Tech, but have not seen their player facilities in person. I have seen pictures of the ones in Chapel Hill and they also blow Clemson away.

Had a convo with Rodney Williams several years ago...

Mar 24, 2013, 5:28 PM [ in reply to Re: Twenty six of the 34 players on the roster... ]

He said the mistake a lot programs make is putting money into the "fan experience" instead of having top notch player amenities first.

I think we failed to take that advice in both our basketball and baseball renovations.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Had a convo with Rodney Williams several years ago...

I think Rodney is speaking from a players perspective. Rodney of all people should know what pays the bills. Fans in the stands.

No, the point is to recruit and put players first. Fans will

Mar 24, 2013, 5:50 PM

come to a winning program no matter what the fan facility is. Then, you update your fan amenities.

It starts with the players and winning.

SCar has a beautiful basketball arena but nobody cares. Duke has one of the worst in the country, but probably the best player amenities in the country as well.

Re: No, the point is to recruit and put players first. Fans will

Mar 24, 2013, 5:56 PM

I think you have to have a mix of both. The fans pay the bills. At the end of the day you cannot forget about them. I completely agree with you that DK needs to be revamped on the players end.

Lets just get it done.
