Parting ways with my truck. It's been a third vehicle and no longer need. 2019 Silverado 2500 HD High Country Diesel. Anyone with experience in using a car buying service such as those?

A truck like that will fetch significantly more money from the private market if youre willing to put in a little time. Otherwise those places are legit and make it easy to get trade in value from a vehicle. You pay for the convenience, but it is really pain free. Of those two Carvana is the way to go.

I’ve heard it’s usually a quick process but not great for your potential value.

I sold a Pilot and a Wrangler (bought new) and made more money than I originally

paid... Had both vehicles 2 years, but that was during covid... I'm not sure how it works today. Body shops still can't get parts, so if u have an accident, pay out of pocket (if not too bad and still driveable) or they'll total your car...

Both times was with Carmax btw***

Twice - better $ than trade in offers, less hassle than dealing with people. Super simple to go into CarMax and get a quote, it's good for a couple of days to let you decide.

I would list first hand on Facebook marketplace & Craigslist

But if you don't want to do that... I would get an estimate from Carmax, Carvana, Cars.com, and maybe edmunds or Truecar.

Then, take the highest offer and go to 2-3 local dealerships.

Up here in the triangle there is a smaller buyer right across the street from Carmax that if you bring a quote from from Carmax or anywhere else in writing they will pay a minimum $500 more, sight unseen.

I wouldn't recommend them unless you need the money now or just prefer convenience over getting the most you can.

In August 2022, I was selling my 2010 Audi Q5 with 70,000 miles. Good shape.

Carmax offered $6,000 and Carvana $6,600. My brother-in-law ended up finding a buyer at his workplace for $12,000.

A little more on my experience with Carmax. I purchased the Audi used from Carmax. I immediately took it to the Audi dealer who found $5,000 worth of work that was needed, even though Carmax claimed it passed their multipoint inspection. I immediately took it back to Carmax and said I wanted to return the car (that was when they had 7 day return policy, I think it might be 30 days now). Carmax said they would fix all the items the Audi dealer found. They did fix it and gave me a loaner while fixing it. I took it back to the Audi dealer just to make sure they did all the work and they did. The lesson to me when buying used you can't trust their inspection process. Get it checked.

Carvana must have at least 5,000 on their lot less than a mile from my house. Every time I drive by their service entrance there's a loaded car hauler either going in or coming out.

Go to Edmunds.com and enter your license plate. It will ask for features/mileage and condition. At the end you will get an instant offer from about 4 different places.

2 1/2 years ago i bought a car from carvana and the car i had at the time to “trade” they valued higher than anyone so i let them buy/trade it. It was a seamless transaction and they delivered the car within 5 days and took away my old one. I feel like i got a great buy on the exact car i wanted and a good price for the old one. The “new” car had 9,000 miles and was in perfect shape.

We sold my wife's 2006 Lexus 350is for $2000 more than we were offered for a trade in when she bought a new Mercedes. We could not sell it locally for $7000, a thousand more than the Mercedes dealer offered, so I took it to Carmax and they offered $8,000. Very easy sell. Of course I could do the same thing now and not get nearly as much as I could sell it privately for more. Timing, I guess!

Good for you! A long time ago I took my bmw 540 sport to carmax to get an offer….it was a low ball. The car was in like new condition but had about 60,000 on it. Needless i didn’t sell to them but i joined the bmw club on line and sold it to a fellow subscriber in IL.
