Billy Napier- New GA OC

Dec 2, 2015, 8:15 AM

Hearing on 680 The Fan Home of the GA Bulldogs that Billy Napier will be Kirby Smart's OC. Does that scare anyone? Not any Clemson fans living in GA.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Napier was awful young when he was here

Dec 2, 2015, 8:17 AM

I'm sure he is better

he was also a fantastic recruiter and hamstrung with

Dec 2, 2015, 8:27 AM

some pretty poor options in the passing game at wr especially in options that could stretch the field or scare an opposing dc. i don't mean to knock the young men, but that was a weird season for clemson wrs and nuk wasn't ready until mid-year if even then and still led all tigers in receptions.

it's been asked before, would billy still be OC if he'd been given another year with better options on the edge as nuk was a year older and sammy was being a freshman all-american?

the wr class clemson brought in committed to billy and the clemson tiger offense before many had ever heard of chad morris.

I remember a whole lot of criticism for Dabo hiring Billy.

Dec 2, 2015, 8:42 AM

He's learning on the job. Doesn't know what he's doing. Experimenting on a trial-and-error basis.

When he let Billy go there was a whole lot of the same criticism for the Chad hire.

Personally, I think Dabo should get as much credit for making the change from Billy as he gets for going after the Chad.

idc what credit you give, this entire post has been about

Dec 2, 2015, 8:49 AM

billy napier, his prospects as an OC and what he brings to the table.

most of the reasons for parting ways were philosophical and even dabo himself said the struggles were as much personnel related, which would have been addressed with that recruiting class. it was pretty amazing and stacked with incredible offensive skill.

i believe dabo didn't want to fail while not embracing his philosophy on offense, which he addressed, nothing wrong with that, he's the man.

that doesn't mean billy or the clemson offense wasn't hamstrung for reasons given, in fact chad said he couldn't believe how little downfield speed clemson had when he reviewed the tapes after taking the job.

And yet, our offense took a big step forward. That's the point.

I hope Billy does well at UGA. And I'm glad he's not our OC.

Dabo did what he had to do in spite of his friendship and respect for Billy. Making that change and also moving on from Kevin Steele are two of the biggest reasons we're where we are today.

who doesn't know this? it has nothing to do with billy and

Dec 2, 2015, 9:05 AM

what he experienced or how he was hamstrung or that he's had a number of years to grow and learn from his experiences.

he was the youngest OC clemson had ever had, good and bright enough to be hired by the man you're lauding for his abilities to manage and see talent.

billy's no longer that guy, hopefully wiser, more experienced and still the bright mind dabo recognized.

Dec 2, 2015, 9:11 AM

I guess what I'm saying in all this is I don't expect UGA to be one bit better with Smart/Napier than they have been under Richt. By your argument, Billy should have all the talent necessary to make UGA into an offensive juggernaut. Time will tell, but I don't expect it to happen. If anything, I expect UGA to be just about what they've been for the last 35 years.

The hatred for former staff members amazes me, all the time on Steele and even Morris which means anyone is game. Coaches see this, it's amazing any are loyal knowing once they leave they will get trashed.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

opinion. I'm talking about results and necessary changes. We definitely upgraded with Chad and BV. The results speak for themselves. And Les Miles had better make the change, too, or this WILL be his last year. LSU needs a shake-up as much as any program in the country. They're an average team and won't get better until Miles gets a real OC and takes his hands off the wheel of the offense. As for Steele, he's no better there than he was here. Should coach LBs and let someone else coordinate.

then say that, because it seems you were "offended" in some

Dec 2, 2015, 9:21 AM [ in reply to Re: who doesn't know this? it has nothing to do with billy and ]

way by me saying billy was hamstrung or in some way felt it was a slight toward dabo and the change that was made.

i don't think that way or feel that way in fact i'm glad dabo isn't afraid to make significant changes, but that doesn't change how pedestrian clemson's wrs were in 2010. chad said as much himself and the rub between what dabo and billy wanted was lay open for all when dabo discussed the change.

billy napier has a tremendous pedigree and if this happens, time will tell if he's the man dabo saw in him when he hired billy, perhaps too soon?

and offensive juggernaut is a matter of perspective; billy isn't a wide-open spread, huhn guy. he was a talented play caller if you break it down, but not of the high flying circus variety.

smart is coming from a saban background, one very comfortable with ball control offenses. i expect that's why billy might be a consideration if you look at family background and what billy himself has promoted.

i also imagine he and dabo are still friends, it's a pretty tight knit group, college coaches and not a lot of jobs out there to be burning bridges on either side.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Me offended? Not at all.

Dec 2, 2015, 9:30 AM

You sound offended though.

You make a good point about the Saban effect. Ball control likely is what Smart is after. I'm definitely not a fan of ball control offenses. The game has passed them by. Even the NFL is experiencing a movement away from that.

So, UGA is old school. Good luck to them. I'll take what we have now and wouldn't go back for anything.

me? i have no feelings you can offend, but this quickly

Dec 2, 2015, 9:41 AM

changed to a dabo knows what dabo's doing thread at none of my doing. that's all on you coming to his defense it would seem, this was about billy and billy alone.

and there's nothing old school about it, winning football games isn't old school, it's good school. you don't have to be a power I team to play ball control, in fact clemson has gone to more ball control with the run game and top has improved because of it. even bama has developed some spread philosophy by hiring kiffin, they just don't have the most dynamic qbs and are still run centric, but do so in one back sets if you follow them at all.

uga's offense was more pro than clemson's as is fsu's. some is not all and chip kelly is crapping the bed now.

there are all kinds of spreads, but really only one huhn and clemson hunh's a lot...

everything Dabo did. He deserves credit for trading up from Chad to Elliot and Scott too.

I don't think Dabo traded Chad. He'd still be here had SMU not come calling.

Our offense still looks the same. I will say, though, our play calling is more aggressive. For that reason, I'm very happy with Tony/Jeff.

the offense as deshaun says, is a clemson offense, one dabo

Dec 2, 2015, 9:10 AM

wanted and the philosophical challenges he and billy faced.

it's interesting that post chad, dabo, elliot and scott all hammered home the notion that the offense going forward would embrace the run, which is moving back toward what napier wanted as well.

they're all growing and changing. clemson's staff for the first time in years didn't study the pistol or other offensive philosophies, clemson's offensive staff studied clemson and went back to basics.

the play book might be the same, but they've taken a lot of motion out along with forging the run game again.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree with all of this.

Dec 2, 2015, 9:13 AM

We now have the smashmouth spread offense we set out to develop. That has a whole lot to do with putting together an elite OL which we have lacked in the past.

it has more to do with attitude and true determination.

Dec 2, 2015, 9:30 AM

look at hot rod's numbers. they're every bit as good as wayne train's, hot rod wasn't given the opportunities and deer lowered don't get me going on howard saying the running backs felt spit on because it was obvious to many they should have... that's all on coach morris.

and be pleasing me for the record, i <3 theChad i really do, but that doesn't mean i liked everything about him and the lip service he paid to smash mouth spread.

this ain't happiness camp
will always be one of my top 5 coach speaks of all time with thanks to theChad for it.

I'm not going to say we couldn't pick up a tough yard when

Dec 2, 2015, 9:38 AM

we needed it because we weren't determined enough. Robbie Caldwell has been skewered as much as any coach on this board. Funny thing how suddenly Caldwell is GREAT. I still think personnel on the OL has made a ton of difference. You have to go back to the Ford days to see a 5* OL come to Clemson. We have the hosses now to move the LOS and get the tough yard.

Maybe that was one of Napier's big handicaps, too. He didn't have the OL to make his offense work.

I have to go to work now. Hope you have a good day, dsp.

clemson didn't have a bunch of five star olinemen in ford's

Dec 2, 2015, 9:50 AM

days as not a lot went onto the pros as five stars would be expected to do. clemson was stupid good on defense too and that's where most of clemson's pros were produced.

the most decorated clemson lineman was probably a pell guy, bostic.

to abandon the longer he was here.

Yeah, I don't know how good Napier really was, but that

Dec 2, 2015, 9:35 AM [ in reply to he was also a fantastic recruiter and hamstrung with ]

team had some pretty glaring personnel issues on the offensive side of the ball. We had little to nothing at WR (i think FR Nuk led the team with 630 yards receiving) and Kyle Parker was flat out bad that season. You can attribute it to his injury if you want, but the fact is we did not get good QB play that year. Ellington was the only offensive weapon and he was banged up a good bit of the year and missed time.

The defense saved us from a 4-5 win season, which is kind of ironic considering it was our achilles heel the next couple of years.

he's a great recruiter and will probably make a good OC.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'd be more worried about Kirby Smart being a good HC

Dec 2, 2015, 8:27 AM

than I would Napier being a good OC if I was a Georgia fan

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Billy Napier got promoted too soon in his career and

Dec 2, 2015, 8:33 AM

was a touch over his head. Pretty sure experience has fixed that problem for him. Hope he does well except when they play Clemson. Plus it will be more fun watching uga hang 50 on the Coots with him there.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Billy Napier- New GA OC

Dec 2, 2015, 8:38 AM

IMO, Napier's biggest "problem" when he was our OC was that he and Dabo weren't on the same page. Dabo was wanting to move more toward the spread, napier was more traditional, I formation, 2 back, etc. Napier called a beautiful game when we beat AU down there. Given UGA's history on O, i think napier will fit in nicely and do a good job.

badge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I wish him nothing but the best, except when he plays us.
