GITT: NC Skiiers

We rented a condo next month in what I thought was the Banner Elk area, but is actually in the town of Beech Mtn., which it seems, is at the top of the mountain. I figure picking up a set of snow chains is probably a good idea. But, is that overkill, and if not, anybody have a recommendation for a set to go with? We'll be taking the 4Runner so set with 4WD, but of course, 4WD is 0WD on ice without traction.

TIA.

You shouldnt need chains. Was in Banner Elk last year when it snowed

and all the roads were salted pretty quickly and drivable. The roads around the resorts are likely a priority, too, since those are for out of town dollars.

Don't matter where you are. I've put a car in a ditch in Boone because it lost traction heading up a middle-tier paved grade.

One year it snowed so hard we had to put on snow chains to get out the driveway. It all depends on the weather and how much it snows. Most years we did not need chains. Any type chain will work, heavy duty chains or light duty cables.

4 wheel drive is all you need

if it is so bad that you need chains and 4 wheel drive then you aren't going anywhere. You will be stuck. It took hours today to get up to Beech mountain. I stayed in Blowing Rock and skied Appalachian Mountain. I had no problems with 4 wheel drive yesterday and today.

Heading up to Sugar in the morning.

In my experience.

Some friends and I rented a place just outside of Boone a few years back. The road up to it iced and we couldnt get up it with 4wd. We felt better when the tractor sent to scrape the road also couldnt make it up.

You probably wont need them but it isnt unheard of
