Big tim bowls - a Clemson / Scar comparison

Nov 2, 2016, 9:48 PM

I've seen a lot of jealous coots complaining about Clemson going to BCS bowls in seasons where they beat us. Masked in the normally nasty comments is their pain and disappointment that even their short-lived "golden era" with Spurrier netted them nothing. No championships, no big time bowl games. This pain cuts deep.

So, let's take a longer view comparison of prominent bowls teams from the state of SC have been invited to, whether they were called BCS, New Years Six or in the old days, just a New Year's Day bowl.

Clemson -
1939 season - Cotton
1950 season - Orange
1956 season - Orange
1958 season - Sugar
1981 season - Orange (national championship)
2011 season - Orange
2013 season - Orange
2015 season - Orange (CFP semifinal)
2015 season - CFP final

South Carolina -
nada, zilch, zippo, bupkis

Case closed.

It would be a disservice not to mention the Gator Bowl games tied into the 1948 season (undefeated) and the 1951 season. Both were new years day bowl games, prior to corporate sponsorship and made for TV slot filler games.

The coots attended the new years day Gator Bowl for their 1945 season (final record of 2-4-3 with their only wins against Presbyterian and Camp Blanding and a 60-0 loss to Duke) but based on their record I'm guessing this was a WWII selection based on availability.

Prior to the late 1970's getting to a bowl game took more than having a winning record.

This is the reason the coots first bowl game win wasn't until 1995

Here's the reason..

Actually it was a negotiation. At the same time Jacksonville was to start the Gator Bowl Columbia wanted to host what they were going to call the Textile Bowl.

Columbia dropped their attempt to host a New Years Day bowl provided usc could play in the inaugural Gator and could pick the opponent. They picked Wake and were beaten handily. Both teams had losing records that year (1945 I think). So began the coots glorious bowl history.

I do not know why yall care about USUC. I might start caring about them when they become the second best team in the state again. We should be spending more time talking about Citadel than USUC, because Citadel is the second best team in the state.

Love to see this! Had 2 family members play citadel football (class of 2010 and class of 2015) and can't tell you how excited they are about the Dogs this season. Shame about recent FCS rankings though :(

Go Tigers! (and Bulldogs)

What about all their conference championships ?
Surely they must have a good many of those having played football since the 1800's ?
