Big 10/Notre Dame

2

Sep 28, 2023, 1:52 PM

I would definitely not surprise me to see a move to the Big 10 by FSU, Clemson, UNC and UVA. I can also see Notre Dame ditching the ACC to hitch themselves as a partial Big 10 member, while maintaining their football independence. I would imagine the money from this type of arrangement would be impressive for Big 10.

Why UVA ? I have seen that at other sites. What is the advantage of adding UVA ?

I think there would be an appeal to add the state of Virginia to Big10's footprint. UVA is the flagship school in the state, excellent academics institution, AAU member, good sports program (outside of football for now). Also, it bridges a travel gap for other ACC schools and is close to other B1G schools such as Penn State and Maryland.

TV market, AAU member, very good basketball, baseball, soccer and lacrosse. Other than football, much better all around than us - also brings more eyeballs to all sports in the state of VA.

They took Maryland and Rutgers. They clearly don't look at Football success or interest in football when choosing who to take.

It seems like the whole philosophy has changed.

When they took Rutgers and Maryland, it was “TV Market Footprint”. They thought they were getting NY/NJ and DC. Now it’s “overall brand”. Or maybe not. Just feels that way.

UVA is 100% in the conversation. Not just for the academic quality, but the reach and general success of athletics (save football).

ND will fight to stay independent as long as they can. It’s a point of pride with their alumni/donor base. But in time they may have no choice.

It will depend on how much they can squeeze out of NBC when re-negotiating their deal. If they get say 30 million a year they will be running to the big really fast.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If they can get $30M/yr, that might be enough to keep them independent

Sep 28, 2023, 5:58 PM

Remember they get a partial payout from ACC (think that's $15-17M ballpark).

Think is w/ ND, they'll have to break the ACC GOR too (which, actually, has the guard in place that if they opt for joining a conference before the GOR is up, they must join ACC as full member). What they're financial penalty would be is an unknown since they don't get a full media share.

This is what I was thinking when I brought up the topic. I am not sure how the ACC contract is written with respect to Notre Dame. I was thinking they could break the GOR as well if the other members exiting can. They have deep pockets and it isn't a full TV share to give up. Just imagine the partial payout from B1G if they aligned with them instead of ACC, especially if the respective ACC institutions join.

I agree. ND will not be in the B1G in any way other than full member. I believe its that or stay “independent.”

How long is Notre Dame’s contract with the ACC? Is there a penalty for breaking it?
