He represented Clemson well. He seems to be a good kid as well. Also, if you're allowed to leave and you want to, do so! I have no hard feelings about a student who wants to transfer.

I am just not at all feeling like he is a big loss. I know many will disagree with me, but I wasn't excited about him as a prospect when he signed or any time afterwards.

When he was listed as out for the USC game, I was indifferent. I doubt he would have changed the outcome much. With him gone, I am even more excited to see what those behind him can do than I ever was with him in the game. He's just not a game-changer. I doubt he ever will. I hope I am wrong and he balls out at ND.

Looked the part but fell very short in my opinion. Didn’t like how he was very below average all game, catch one ball and do the big “first down” move.

I wish him good luck and I don't blame him. Everything yall are saying is true but it seems to be true of far too many talented WRs lately. We aren't developing the position well. These kids are as good as they're going to get when the arrive. That is not good.

It's freaking sad that our 2 best wrs last 2 yrs were fallback true freshman. Beaux was as good his freshman yr as he was this yr. Why are Wrs coming in and seem to shine but don't get better under Grisham? Are recruits getting just as good of coaching at HS level? While I do doubt that, there seems to be a lack of development last few yrs.

I completely agree. Our WRs lately do not look any different as sophomores or juniors as they do as true freshman. Is it a lack of game changing speed, a talent issue, or development/coaching? Would these same players develop the same under Jeff Scott as they have Grisham? There were so many receivers that were anywhere from generational, to great, to good from 11-20. From 21-23, it’s cratered. There are just a lot of questions that we can’t know, only speculate.

Agree with all. Just didn’t seem to have the drive and didn’t fight for contested passes. If it didn’t hit him in the hands in stride he didn’t seem to put much effort into making the catch. Negative body language after plays. Wish him well but don’t think we will miss him a lot.

HLRT - What are your thoughts on Noble Johnson? I had high hopes for him this year then he redshirted so we didn’t get to see him. Maybe we’ll see him in the bowl game. I ended up sitting next to his family at the spring game and they seemed like a bunch of good folks. Got a feeling he’s got a good foundation to build on.

He was an "athlete" and not a true WR so he probably needed the RS year to really learn the position properly. I hope he put the work in.

He could’ve stepped in and contributed this year IMO from practice reports. Ironically, he played the same spot as Beau, so we held him. Him and Hanafin will turn some heads soon, especially if Moore and Wesco are who we think they will be.

We have a ton of talent at WR, Cade just isn’t TL or DW, meaning he can’t overcome weaknesses. Luke firming up the OL will unlock Cade, we had guys open all year but Cade was seeing ghost and had a timer and never made it through progressions. If Luke does what I think he will, watch out.

Two things:
1. With Beau it was his inconsistencies (some are related to Cades consistent high passes)

2. Rarely do you see a team with outstanding OL and DL on the same team. Our DL is so good I think it hurts the confidence of our OL, because if you are getting beat down everyday in practice I am sure it breaks them down mentally and physically come game time. Unless Luke can bring in as equally great talent as we have on the DL, then it might be the same thing under him.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep. Exactly.***

Well he went to Catholic high school so maybe he is going back to his roots. At a minimum if he can get another solid degree from Notre Dame many doors will be open nationally.

Not a bad analysis. Seems like a great kid and wish him well.

I was hoping he was going to be another big-time boundary WR. We either mis-evaluated him, or didn't develop him. He was highly recruited and turned out average. Painful theme lately.

And while I am far from an expert, I don't remember his HS highlights really impressing me that much. He was a solid 4 star, but like HLH said, I didn't see any "dog" in him. I was hoping for the best, obviously, but not too surprised that he turned out to be average.

I looked at another highlight again, geeze, is that the same DJU?

It’s an interesting move. He was obviously one of the players speculated to transfer. The general assumption being he’d go back to CA or a west coast team, or perhaps team back up with DJ. Presumably ultimately landing in a better passing offense to bump stats.

South Bend is about as opposite of a locale as one can find vs Southern CA. Their offense is a work in progress and definitely not more of a sure thing than Clemson, even adding Leonard.

I guess playing time will be guaranteed, but he would have seen plenty of run here if he could stay on the field.

Unlikely he received a kings ransom through NLI and not really the most ideal springboard to the NFL. Good luck to the kid, but a bizzare choice IMO.

The level of impact of losing Collins depends on how you look at it IMO. I agree that he doesn't appear to have elite talent, and if you were to compare his talent to the talent we had at receiver just before and during our CFP run then he doesn't appear to measure up.

However, receiver is a position we've struggled at the past few years, and we could currently use all the help we can get there, and he was at least one of the better ones on our current roster so losing him hurts a bit in that department.

It's also hard for me to fairly judge his level of play at this point. We've struggled for consistent good play at QB during his time here, and we've struggled to keep good and healthy talent at the receiver position around him. I don't think he's a true #1 receiver type of guy, but he's often been asked to be that guy for us. He may very well have shined in a true #2 or #3 role behind more elite receivers who would demand more coverage attention from opposing defenses. I think that's been true for basically our full roster of receivers over the past few years. We just haven't had that true #1 guy.
