Beach trip recommendations?

We went to San Diego last year and had a blast. This year the exact same trip is almost 2x the cost. They liked the zoo, aircraft carrier, military museum, and the beach. Given the stupid cost increase, we're wondering if we should go somewhere else and find a cool town.
Basically want waves and a walkable town. Anything else is a bonus. Outside of the Gulf Coast, what towns/cities would you recommend? East or West coast is fine. Kids are 9 and 11 years old so there will be 4 of us. Thanks.

it really was a shack, but beachfront, and cool bar right across street. no AC was interesting. but was an awesome week. It did have enormous houses on each side

announced direct flights from GSP to a few different locations.
One of those is Tampa and I saw pricing "from" $49 each way. That'd be an inexpensive way to get to Anna Maria if you don't fance the 12 hour drive.
