today to my neighbors who are in the 80s. It is about a 50 yard walk. Walked over when I got back from running. 19 dgrees. I had on a couple of layers of high tech clothes. Probably much better than anything the guys in Bastogne had....AND IT WAS COLD!!!!I cannot imagine staying out there all night....Those men WERE MEN!!!!

I heard one guy there in an interview say for 30 plus days, I think< it did not get above freezing and he promised himself he would never be cold again if he survived. He was from the north but moved to S Fla as soon as he got home.

Friend of the family was in Korea same thing. Primised that he would never complain about being hot again. 90+ degree south georgia heat with darn near that humidity. Sweat dripping off him shirt smoked. Never a single word about the heat.

Reading Atkinsons 3rd volume of Liberation Trilogy right now. The Guns at Last Light. So thankful for the greatest generation. If we had to save the world today……….well we can’t save ourselves so the world is cooked. But we can print money so we got that going for us.

My first duty assignment in 1969, after various schools

at Ft. Benning was with an Airborne/Mechanized Infantry unit in Mainz, Germany, and I lived in that frigid winter climate through two seasons.
I enjoyed visiting a number of battlefield historical sites, and one trip was to Hamm, Luxembourg to the American Military Cemetery. Therein was the grave of Gen. George S. Patton, Commander of the Third Army. It was Patton's units who led the drive for the relief of Bastogne during that horrid winter after the Allied command became desparate. Patton stunned the assembled leadership in that famous Verdun conference by vowing to have relief elements enroute within 48 hours, which he did by halting his advance and spinning his troops on a 90 degree axis toward Bastogne...a remarkable feat of generalship hailed to this day.
As I stood in that cemetery viewing his grave and the sea of white crosses only 25 years removed from the war, I had this immense sense of gratitude for my Father's generation and a sense of pride that I now served in one of the cities also taken/relieved by George Patton.
All of those memories I now credit to one thing: that my Alma Mater, Clemson, gave me the opportunity to become a part of the U.S. Army and serve our nation...just like those brave men so many years ago.

For those not familiar, I'd encourage reading about the battle of Lanzareth Ridge. 18 man recon platoon + 4 artillery observers without Armor and almost nearly zero artillery support held up a major German axis of advance for over 20hrs totally wrecking the attack timeline. All were wounded and captured or killed so their efforts went almost totally unrecognized until decades later.
After it all came out, that platoon became, I believe, the most heavily decorated platoon of the war.

Best generation of men…period. #### Winters leading a battalion full of the absolute bravest men to ever walk our lands. Joe Toye fighting off Germans without any boots on…Tremendous combat leaders like Ronald Spier and Buck Compton leading these men…These were just a few of the courageous thousands that were surrounded in the Ardennes and Bastogne…
