First, I'm not really a big tournament fisherman...and this wasn't really a big tournament event. It was easy to qualify and a fun trip for an adult and "junior" (my 15 year old nephew) fishing tournament.

There were 48 boats, and 1st place was over $2,000. It probably cost about $700-$800 to fish with hotel and fuel.

So practice day 1, we found about 3 places we could catch some fish. I caught a nice smallmouth that weighed 2.7 lbs.

Practice day 2, we went way up a creek and it was dead, we spent most of our day exploring this new water for 2 bites. So we went back out of the creek to the main river and caught fish in 3 new places.

Tourney day 1. We went to a creek we fished two years ago and started catching fish right away, but they were small. We had about 8-10 keepers on the day, but our weight was terrible. We weighed 3 fish for just over 4 lbs and sitting 37/48 boats. It was less than desirable, but we did win 2 pairs of sunglasses valued at $100.

Tourney day 2. New plan was to hit a creek we found on day 1. We caught small fish there earlier, but thot there should be better quality. So early on I land a 4.6 largemouth on a buzz toad. We caught a few more fish in the creek, but nothing great. So then we runs to another creek and mcnephew busts a 2.6 largemouth and a 2 lb largemouth. Hey, we got something now. Then he hooks a goodun, got her in the net and she is just over 4 lbs. Now, we got a sack...like potential biggest of the day sack.

We are one of the last boats to weigh in and we drop that sack on the scales and it is the biggest of the tourmanent just over 11.5 lbs for 3 fish. This gets us 1st place bonus bucks ($300) and moves us from 37th all the way up to 10th place ($300). Also, since we finished in the top 10, we qualified for a tournament in March to fish for 2 bass boats (1 for 1st place and 1 for 2nd place). I mean, we don't have much of a chance, but it's sweet to qualify for a large tournament like that.

TLDR: Tournament day 1 was crap, but we whacked em on day 2 and qualified for a big tournament in March to try and win a bass boat.

Run up to where youtube boi was catching smallies?

We went wayyyyy up Flint Creek for practice and only had 2

bites. So we scrapped it. Maybe could have caught something if we kept going up.

We spent most of day 1 up Cotaco which was a 15 mile run + about 5-6 miles fishing up the creek. They were in there but for some reason just couldn't get them gooduns.

Day 2 we went up another creek a normal intelligent person wouldn't take their bass boat. But mine is already a scratch and dent sale and I packed a battery chainsaw and dgaf.

NOICE. There are definitely many areas on Wheeler

that can get hairy back up in creeks like that.

Luckily there was another boat in Flint and he was a local

as recommended by TRDJ...avoided Atlanta. Although, we did get stuck for 20 mins right by the river on a 2-lane bc crash.

No gators, but could definitely see there being some where we were at.

Evinrude was running real good today getting us out of the hole and gettin our Stratos 22FXRGT to the honey holes first and when we got there the ceramic bearings in my Daiwa 429XP was letting me put my Fish Formula coated jigs right where I wanted em and my Color C-lector was telling me exactly which color they was biting and my Roland Martin fishing glasses made it feel like I was in the water right there with em.

It was a lot of luck and the fact I was willing to abuse my boat.

Some of them dudes run up to Guntersville?***

I’m most impressed with a trailer that makes it from SC to AL and back with no issues. I give my trailer so much care and attention and that POS just craps on me time and time again.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Grease in wheels, air in tires.

Jul 31, 2023, 10:01 AM

That covers about 99% of what is probable for going wrong.

1

Jul 31, 2023, 10:10 AM

Freaking brakes are the problem. I’ve replaced the entire tongue to get a new actuator, bleed the fluid annually, have replaced the entire drums on both, sides, etc, put new bearing buddies on it and check the grease religiously…... still the last time I ran 75 down the Cumberland parkway one wheel got red hot to the point a stud sheared off. It doesn’t matter if I adjust the drums perfectly in the driveway, they get out of whack on a long drive.

Luckily it’s only doing duty 2 miles at a time now in KY, and an electric disc brake conversion would cost more than the trailer is worth, so I’m just going to keep it as is and gripe about it.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Different category of trailer for sure.

Drum brakes?

2

Jul 31, 2023, 10:19 AM [ in reply to Yeah, 6500-7k and double axle, and the ]

I imagine they'd last about an hour in salt water.

Everything on mine braking wise is stainless steel--including the rotors. The calipers, pistons, pad backing plates, even the mounting brackets and lug nuts. I'm thinking about getting stainless idler hubs, but stopped at galvanized for those.

I "refurbished" my torsion stub axles back in May, but even after knocking off the rust, Ospho prepping them then painting them and replacing the hub seals wear sleeves..they'll all need to be replaced next year. I'll prob just put all new axles on it as they'll be 7 years old...and that's about the life span for torsion bars on tandem axle trailers.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yup. The trailer is how I know my boat has never

2

Seen salt water, because this POJ would be a pile of ferrous oxide under a boat if it had.

poverty drum brakes though. Of course, I haven't used mine in two years and am getting ready to take my boat out so I can replace the transducer mount with a stainless one this week, so it'll probably fall apart. Hopefully the 8 year old tires will hold up for the couple of miles I've got to go.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I greased the bearing a few weeks ago

Jul 31, 2023, 10:01 AM [ in reply to In all seriousness, as a fellow boater ]

last time I greased them was last year....so they looked good.

I inspected the leaf springs, my tires are less than a year old. Yeah, it's always a concern. Some people pull my boat with a double axle, but I have the single axle. I probably averaged 69 mph, but I hit 80 a few times as well.

Only had 2 problems ever, boat were tires giving out. 1 in 2016? and 1 last year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I pulled mine up to Clemson in 2021.

At that point I was all like "let's just match the hatch Bo!" and all we had to do was pick out the jig with a green pumpkin skirt and a Reaction Innovations Big Texan Sweet Beaver trailer and we started a feeding frenzy so intense the folks on nearby docks thought it was white bass in the jumps lol.
