Athletic Facilities

Mar 4, 2013, 12:02 AM

I talked to a friend of mine who's on the Athletic Council's facilities committee and there are some pretty interesting ideas being floated around the athletic department. Apparently, the 2 sites under consideration for a new basketball arena are the wooded area between Ravenel Rd and Hwy 93 on the north side of Littlejohn across from the Esso Club and Lot 6, directly behind the cemetery. While I'm not real crazy about either of those, I guess I'd prefer Lot 6. Trying to build in that creekbed would be incredibly expensive. He also said that there are discussions of switching the soccer practice fields and the tennis center. I guess that would be good for the soccer programs to consolidate their operations in one location, but I don't know how that would help tennis. I read where Bob Mahony said that the work on Doug Kingsmore isn't likely to start until after the 2014 season and I think that's a problem unless they expand the project. Waiting another year just puts Clemson that much farther behind. That being said, I'd rather wait one more year and be sure it's done right than go ahead and build what's planned, only to find out 4 years later that it's inadequate. That's the situation with Littlejohn now. When it re-opened in 2003, it was such a huge improvement over the dump it was that few people realized how inadequate it still was. Let's make sure that the work on Doug Kingsmore is going to "finish the job" before it's started than realizing it's still missing things a few years down the road.

Ravenel would be horrible...

Mar 4, 2013, 12:31 AM

That's so far away from the heart of everything. I think any talks that take it across the lake should be immediately thrown out. I'd like to keep everything centrally located (somewhat).

Ravenel Rd...

Mar 4, 2013, 1:05 AM

is the road that runs along the North side of Littlejohn between Perimeter and Centennial. There's a creekbed between Ravenel and SC 93 directly across from the Esso Club.

Re: Ravenel Rd...

Mar 4, 2013, 1:46 AM

Yep parked there as a kid for pretty much all the football games. If I am recalling correctly. Just down the bottom of the hill North of Littlejohn. Only about a minute walk up that hill to current LittleJohn if recall the location right.

No where near the other side of the lake. its basically right next to Esso but across the road.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

why would we not just demo the existing building

Mar 4, 2013, 7:55 AM

and rebuild in same foot print? Let the team play off campus in Greenville for 2 years.

What is the plan for the existing facility? We need the space. I hope they don't just leave it there.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

be tough plus you eliminate most students from attending the games.

work-out an agreement with the Bi-Lo Center.

During the last renovation, the Bi-Lo Center attempted to take advantage of the situation by price gouging the cost for the use of the facility and concession revenues which is why the games were ultimately played in Anderson.

Why would it be tough? I mean what other option do we have? I would lmao if we averaged a better fan attendance in Greenville. Greenville is home to a massive amount of Clemson fans. I don't think this will be as tough as you think

Re: is Lot 6 behind the North Stands?***

Mar 4, 2013, 10:06 AM

lot #6 is West of the WEst Zone and somewhat South. it is a great lot and nothing should be done with it unless it is expanded.. this taking football parking is a horrible idea.
put the new basketball facility out on Old Stone Church Road, demolish LJ and make more football parking!!IMHO we should do nothing with LJ until the Clemson admin and BOT decides to get ready to be serious about baskb.

Mar 4, 2013, 8:22 AM

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Renovation is certainly an option, but.....

Mar 4, 2013, 8:59 AM

I have been told that is not an option that is currently receiving a lot of attention. For the time being at least, the primary focus seems to be on building a new arena. Of course, that may all change once they start putting together budget estimates.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Two other locations that were being considered....

Mar 4, 2013, 9:24 AM

1 - The lot at the corner of Williamson Road and Perimeter Road which is currently Lot 10 for football parking), and

2 - The Calhoun Field Laboratory which directly across Perimeter Road from Lot 10.

both of those would work...I wonder if they have the will

Mar 4, 2013, 9:26 AM

power/desire to raise the $ for a new arena..you're looking at $100M. That's a lot of cash.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

From what I have been told....

Mar 4, 2013, 9:37 AM

the option that is currently getting the most attention is demmoing Littlejohn and rebuilding on the existing site. One concern is the on-going maintenance issue that would result from keeping the old arena.

That is something that is currently being evaluated....

Mar 4, 2013, 9:44 AM

but building on the existing site would likely increase the overall cost of construction due to the added expense of demolition.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My preference would be to rebuild on the existing site....

Mar 4, 2013, 10:56 AM

Some of the other proposed sites, while functional, would disrupt football parking (especially the Lot 6 and Lot 10 options). However, there are still far too many unknows to make an educated decision either way at this point.

One thing is for sure, if we are going to do it, we need to do it right. I simply don't want a bandaid type approach where we go off in one direction with a short term solution and in ten years realize that now we need to do more.

Mar 4, 2013, 1:37 PM

Ten years ago we renovated Littlejohn. At the time that wasn't a bad decision.

However, once the roof issue became known and the renovation cost increased by more than $30 million, we should have demolished it an started over.

That was a bad decision IMO.

Well either do it or drop basketball as a program. I don't think you need 92 million to build a nice arena. I think Auburn's is probably too big.

Re: Athletic Facilities

Mar 4, 2013, 9:43 PM

All I know is they better design the new arena with noise in mind. LJC, even at 60-70% capacity can be a tough place to play because of the acoustics of the building. There is no need for noise absorbing cloth to hang from our ceiling...

That said, I like the looks of the Auburn and CofC buildings (I live in Mt. Pleasant, so I've been to a CofC game there). Definitely pleasing to the eye.

The current LJC location is probably the best place to build the new arena. What would we use the old one for? A 10k seat volleyball court? The current facility is located such that it also provides support during football games with the tailgating restrooms and such. Yes, it might cost a lot to demo the building, but we would probably end up demolishing the thing anyways, so why not get it all done in one outing?
