I just heard the most disturbing take on the Pat McAfee show

16

Sep 7, 2023, 5:30 PM

yet about our offensive woes. It was this: They (Herbstreit and another guy as video guests) said that Garrett Riley had to come in and learn THE CLEMSON OFFENSE, versus installing what he ran at SMU and TCU. I have a really hard time believing that Dabo would be that foolish, but what we saw against Duke certainly resembled in a big way what we saw the last couple of years.

Have we really purchased a Ferrari and put low grade recap tires on it? If so, it makes no sense whatsoever that Dabo canned Streeter.

That's what Dabo said to Mullen and the two other guests on the show pregame. It was odd but I'd like to hear one of our reporters to ask he or Riley to clarify. I don't think, imo, he meant it like it came out.

Riley stated when he came that he wanted to simplify our offense.

Btw @spud posted a breakdown link this morning That's well worth the listen.

You can't install a new offense in one season. We are in a year of transition. I hope and believe we will be where we are going toward the middle of the season.

As far as Riley having to learn the system, only a fool wouldn't take advantage of what the players are familiar with.

in Riley's first season at TCU and went on to make the playoffs and the natl championship game. Additionally, Duggan finished second in Heisman voting. Interesting ClemsonTiger1988®.

You can absolutely install a new offense in one season…in the 90’s clemson had 4 different OC’s in 4 years. Do you think they all used the same offense? Nope. The only reason a new coordinator would us the same offense would be if that is what the head coach has insisted on. Chad morris, Tony Elliott and Brandon streeter ran the “clemson offense” because that is what they were told to do. And as with every other program the head coach can call plays anytime he wants…some coaches let the coordinators do their thing, some develop the game plan themselves and call all the plays…even though another coach holds the title of OC. Dabo falls on the middle, sometimes calls plays, sometimes doesn’t. Just depends on the game.

I’ve played organize team sports, and you can install a new offense in three practices. But it can take you half of season to get good at it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Disagree.

Sep 8, 2023, 3:10 PM [ in reply to It's partly true. ]

Why bring in a new guy and give him all year to install his offense just to fall back on your old crappy plays that haven't worked in 2 years?

I mean, it looked like the same crappy offense but I am more hopeful that I don't know what I am seeing and it's just taking the team a while to adjust to the new RILEY offense.

As bad as our OL is, they did have some masterful pass blocking plays upon a second look.

Riley literally installed both the SMU and TCU offenses in one season. That's very typical for an elite coordinator. It's not as complicated as you're acting. If anything, Riley's offense is easier to learn for the newbies. It takes more seasons to get your kind of players into a system, but that's different.

I think some ppl are forgetting how young cade is as a qb… he is going to be fantastic with time I fully believe… but he’s gotta have help at wr. I have a hard time we missed on this many ranked guys at the position which leads me to believe they aren’t being developed. I think some ppl thought cade was gonna be DW or TL and that happens very rarely and we were spoiled with it twice. Cade has that gunslinger mentality where he will throw picks and I’m fine with that if we are throwing it deep and throwing for 350 a game but not when we mostly rely on the run now and have long drives. If I’m really mad about anything is the scheduling… why are we goin on the road to open up seasons so often now when we were the face of the acc. If we would have gotten two cupcakes like 85% of the rest of college football a lot of these kinks would have been worked out and I bet anything if we played duke game 3/4 it’s completely diff

I agree with that. Cade may have gotten in 10 games as reported but imo only 4 last year were meaningful. Ga tech, cuse, unc, and UT. ND was one series, much like the other 6.

I really wish he'd have had a lot more meaningful snaps with the ones last year. We also need to keep in mind, Cade didn't have a couple of our wr in spring because of injuries. But Cade did make some headscratcher reads. Kinda like hunter Johnson had when he was back-up

You have to play the card you're dealt.

1

Sep 7, 2023, 6:09 PM

Think about that guy who followed the triple option at GT. All the returners were seasoned vets of the triple option. To not have taken advantage of that would have been stupid. He had to replace all those guys and get talent suitable for his preferred offense.

If Riley stays we'll be doing the same. You don't run a rally car at Le Mans.

I'm not excusing the horrible play we saw Monday but I can see Clemson continuing in what the players are doing well, relatively speaking, and not that they set the woods on fire Monday. Actually, Imo, they set the dumpster on fire.

Re: I just heard the most disturbing take on the Pat McAfee show

Dabo has also had an “us” and a “we” mindset. I highly doubt Dabo meant this as “Riley is just here to run plays.” OP neglected to mention what Herbstreit said in his response which is that Clemson is not focused on one guy. It’s about us as a program. It’s not about Cade, Riley, Shipley, etc.

You people think Dabo has fallen off his rocker. Also, to all those claiming Swinney ran the offense, you missed David hood saying the play calling was entirely Riley. The offense nor the defense is a single led unit. Everything goes through the other coaches, hence why Dabo said play calling is a collaborative effort. This does not mean the coordinators don’t have a say, I would imagine more often than not, the coordinators get most of the calls they want.

Nobody seems to think Dabo is calling defensive plays, yet the defense apparently still has the same issues as last year.

I get Dabo has some things he’s not willing to let go of, but if you think he’s not willing to do whatever it takes to get to a national championship again, you are lost.

Sep 7, 2023, 8:37 PM [ in reply to Re: I just heard the most disturbing take on the Pat McAfee show ]

I don’t think Dabo has fallen off his rocker at all. Sadly, I think he’s very clear on what he wants and thinks is right. But re: whatever it takes to win a title… please. With all due respect, Coach Swinney has said and repeatedly shown there are things he’s not willing to do in the new world of college football, pull scholarships, oversign, use NIL to attract and find talent in the portal, etc. It’s simply not accurate to say he’ll do whatever it takes to win a national title. He does what he thinks is right. His way. For better and worse. But by no means is it whatever it takes.

Re: I just heard the most disturbing take on the Pat McAfee show

2

Sep 7, 2023, 10:00 PM

Fair question and tbh none of us know that for certain. But the saying too little too late is cliche for a reason. Based on what I’ve seen the past few seasons, I personally believe the rate at which college football is changing, albeit for the worse, outpaces the rate at which Dabo makes changes. There’s evidence of that. Even something like changing the offense / OC- how much time do we have to integrate air raid with what Clemson does? A transition season? Another year behind recruiting at WR where we desperately need upgrades? We’ll see what happens in the next few weeks. Maybe we play that much better vs FSU and it’s something to build on. I just look at how we’re losing games the past 2 seasons and imo, the rate at which we have gone from beating elite teams (15-18) to competing with elite teams (19-20) to recently losing bad (ND, Tenn) and losing games we flat out shouldn’t be losing (S Carolina, Duke) makes me question what it will take for him to change his stance on some of these tenets of the program he holds dearly. The game is that different now. If we slowly change doing what Clemson does, it’s going to get increasingly harder to get back to national titles.

Accurate. The recent NFL draft tells the tale

TCU had the second overall WR selected in the first round trailing
only an OhioSt WR ( shocker ). They also had a 4th rounder.

At Clemson currently there are no NFL caliber WRs.
Dabo will claim Beaux Collins is an NFL WR
