article about Rahshaun Smith and Maryland....

What We're Hearing: Can Terps Flip Blue-Chip Baltimore Native?

Buzz about a surprise visitor picked up early last month when Clemson commit Rahshaun Smith, the nation's No. 1 inside linebacker in 2016, visited campus. Smith, who is close friends with Terps commit Dwayne Haskins, spent the day with fellow commit D.J. Turner, Haskins and offensive coordinator Mike Locksley touring the campus and getting reacquainted with the Maryland coaching staff.

Haskins has used his close friendship to get the Terps back in contention with Rahshaun Smith.
A week later, the Baltimore native attending IMG Academy (Fla.) was back on campus with Haskins and and Turner touring the campus yet again and watching one of the recent camps Randy Edsall and his staff held. His latest trip to College Park came during the 'Big Show' event, when the Terps hosted a number of big time prospects, such as Ohio State commit Terrell Hall, 2017 IMG defensive tackle Cam Spence, and 2017 DeMatha running back Anthony McFarland.

Since then, sources have told IMS that the staff has become increasingly confident in their chances of flipping the Maryland native. Maryland isn't the only school that has continued to recruit Smith, though, as IMS has learned Florida State is another school that has inquired quite a bit about the nation's top inside linebacker. The four-star is planning on returning to Clemson this summer for the All-In cookout, which is an event held for Clemson commits and targets. The question remains, though, whether Smith, the No. 58 prospect in the Class of 2016, is all in on his Clemson commitment.

InsideMDSports.com's Jeff Ermann reached out to Smith's coach with the Next Level Nation Cory Robinson, for clarification.

"He's still committed to Clemson. He just happened to be in town and has been talking to coach Locksley, and he wanted to spend some time with him because he looks at him as a mentor," Robinson said. "I think he's pretty solid."

Another source close to the heralded four-star, though, told IMS that "he's been talking up Maryland more and more recently, he seems to really be considering joining the movement."

Maryland hasn't recruited heavily in Baltimore city in recent years -- the last Next Level Nation member signed by the Terps was Wes Brown in 2012 -- and it won't have to go the distance to find out if Smith will make the switch. He plans to enroll in college after the first semester.

Not worried yet

Smith doesn't talk to the media much, which means they can say whatever they want and he won't bother refuting it.

meant to add this in the original post..

according to Ryan Bartow of Clemson's 247 site...

Smith said today at The Opening he's very solid to Clemson, given his rapport with Tigers defensive coordinator Brent Venables.

I think this is UMD folks hoping and trying to create fictitious momentum. I'd rather clean urinals all day than attend UMD.

LOL..the coach says he's still strong to Clemson..

Jul 8, 2015, 2:08 PM

...but to make the Terp fans following them happy an unnamed person says "he's considering considering the terps"....lol.

There's no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people who ask questions.

For what it's worth, Rahshaun Smith wasn't on the list of players Dwayne Haskins was trying to bring to MD with him when he committed
