Nice Write up on Jackson Carman-Clemson visit (pasted)

1. Clemson came back from spring break with a bang this week, influencing a seemingly long-odds five-star to name the Tigers his new No. 1 after his first trip to campus.

The country’s top-ranked offensive lineman, Fairfield (Ohio) tackle Jackson Carman, raised plenty of national eyebrows Tuesday upon pushing Clemson ahead of instate flagship Ohio State following his stay the day before.

The Buckeyes had been viewed as a foregone conclusion to land Carman (6-6, 305) -- ranked No. 4 overall by Rivals.com – and for quite logical reasons, however presumptive. Urban Meyer’s recruiting reputation speaks for itself, and Carman had visited there a handful of times already.

Clemson had long been the school Carman consistently cited as wanting to check out before advancing his recruitment, and his proclamation proved it was anything but lip service.

We have spoken to several contacts with knowledge of Carman throughout the process, including following the visit.

This development doesn’t necessarily come as a surprise, although the manner in which he broadcast Clemson’s ascension publicly and promptly was arguably unexpected.

The sense among those who know him is that Carman is different, as evidenced by the fact he plays five different music instruments. Many readers will appreciate that he was once quoted as saying he believed this network ranked him low out of the gate (No. 64) as its way of “subliminally penalizing” him for not attending its camp last spring. Plus if you’re going to give yourself a nickname, “The Soul Collector” is about as strong as can be for an offensive lineman.

In other words, the Tigers saw in him another Christian Wilkins – an eclectic character who possessed the self-assuredness and conviction to form his own opinions and do his own thing.

Which in this case, could mean defying the popular and pressured matriculation to Ohio State.

Consider the words Carman told TigerIllustrated.com in his post-visit interview: “In the back of my mind, there’s almost like a tiny obligation to a certain school. I just thought to myself, if I eliminate that, where do I really want to be? As of right now – I haven’t been to all my places yet – but it’s Clemson.”

Was Carman still riding a common post-visit high toward this shiny new experience? It’s fair to speculate that played some part.

But when he said the Clemson visit was unlike any of his others, it’s not as if he’s been a prospect sheltered only to Ohio State either. He went to games at Alabama and Notre Dame last fall. He’s seen Michigan. So there’s substance behind his strong words.

Ohio State’s antenna was invariably raised, and the Buckeyes now know whom they must recruit against for him. Carman is not expected to render a decision until after his senior season at earliest, so there’s a long way to go here, and a forthcoming overnight stay in Columbus could easily translate to damage control.

But Clemson accomplished what it needed to with that first visit; it left enough of an impression that Carman will almost certainly return, presumably to give his mother a feel for this legitimate option. One would assume the Tigers will try to convince them to travel in for the “All-In Cookout” in July.

We can tell you that Carman communicates with Cartersville (Ga.) five-star quarterback commitment Trevor Lawrence, who is working behind-the-scenes to convince Carman and Atlanta (Ga.) Pace Academy five-star interior lineman Jamaree Salyer to unite and give the Tigers a headline-stealing core.

Clemson already has the nation’s preeminent triggerman this cycle.

It’s putting up an impressive fight to score the finest protection for him.
