anyone ever bought an "open box" tv from Best Buy?

Feb 7, 2013, 10:19 PM

Found what I think is a great deal, but I worry about the "open box-ness" of the item.

I'm hoping it was a return from someone "renting" it for the Super Bowl. But I don't know for sure.

Do they offer any warranty or can you return it if needed?

If so, I wouldn't hesitate.

MauldinT, where are you???

apparently it's the same as for any tv they sell.

Same warranty and return policy.

The only question is if it's a display model then it's been on for like 10hrs a day for months.

I know of a TV that ran continuously for 25+ years in a furniture store in Pineville, NC. The security guard, Daniel Boone, told me about it.

Yes, Daniel Boone, and it was on 24/7 for 25+ years.

TV's ain't made like that any more...

I've got a Sony from the early 90's that still has a pretty good picture. I figure if I get 4-5 years out of my Vizio I'll be satisfied.

Deweather, what TV is it?

Panasonic TC-P55UT50

It actually may be too big, but I figure I'd start big and then move down if need be.

It's plasma, and I know burn-in can be a problem, but it was on in the store and I didn't notice any issues there.

$500 is the tipping point

Have no opinion of the tv, but I'm leery of best buy

Get crystal clear on the return policy.

I think they've solved the burn-in problem.

Feb 8, 2013, 8:33 AM [ in reply to Panasonic TC-P55UT50 ]

Anyone with a differing opinion can feel free to comment, but I've owned plasmas since '05, and I haven't had an issue (knock on wood).

Viewing from oblique angles is great with the plasmas, and the color is more reminiscent of a tube television, which I like.

I also have a Panasonic (not sure of the model). I think they generally make the best mass-market plasmas, compared to, say, LG (my first plasma) who stinks.

Burn in isn't an issue anymore. The life of the plasma

has been cut by it being a store model, but their lives are now about 15 years, so you're fine.

If open-box is a display model then it depends....

Feb 8, 2013, 7:59 AM

on the type of TV.

For instance, if it is a plasma subject to burn-in, they normally jack up the contrast on the display models to make them look as sharp as possible. This can lead to burn-in, depending on the image being shown.

Of course, if they allow returns, then you could return it if there are any image issues.
