Addiction is a disease

Dec 30, 2016, 10:36 PM

It's not an excuse for behavior. Addiction is obsession and compulsion. The addict obsessions about the next drink or pill or fix and once they start compulsion takes over and common sense is gone. The disease concept of addiction makes sense to the addict, because they have no clue why they obsess to get high and they also have no clue why once they start they can not stop like other people can. Using makes less sense to the addict than it does to anyone else.

Just like diabetes is a disease that you have no control over, the addict has a disease that he or she has no control over. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks about the addict. Trust me, they know what society thinks about them and they think less of themselves than society does.

Just like diseases like diabetes must be treated, addiction must be treated too. The difference is that addiction needs to be treated by not using. Not using can be difficult for the addict, but once a new way of life is learned, addicts can become responsible productive members of society.
