Ole Frank has some good sayings.

He also said, "If you can't block, you can't run; and if you can't tackle, you will lose."

He was so funny. Got to hear him roast Senator Strom Thurmond once at Thurmond's birthday event. Hilarious.

My favorite..."The administration gave me a little raise but asked that I not tell anyone what I was making. I told them not to worry because I was as ashamed of it as they were."

My all time favorite one is when Coach Howard went out to eat pizza with his family at his favorite pizza parlor. The waitress asked him how many slices did he want her to cut his pizza. He told her:
"Cut my pizza into 8 pieces, not 12 like you did last time because I cannot eat 12 slices!"

That's funny. I remember several years ago attending a local football touchdown club meeting where a former head of ACC officials was the speaker. Her told all kinds of great stories.

He said when he was working the famous 1981 Clemson v UNC game as head official, there was a crucial third down where Clemson was stopped just inches short. Because the drive started on the 20 after a touchback, Clemson had to make the 30 for the first down.

The referee did not call for a measurement because the ball wasn't touching the 30. Danny screemed at him, "Hey Mr. Ref, we want a measurement!!!" The ref told him no need because the ball wasn't touching the 30. Danny fired back, "I still want one anyway. How do you know the people that striped the field did it correctly?"

In 1979 at Chapel Hill, Clemson was leading late and punted out of the end zone, UNC ball on the 20. UNC ran 4 plays and was a good 6 inches short of the 30. Ref signals Clemson ball. #### Crum runs out and calls for a measurement. Guess what, 1st down! Danny knew that field wasn't striped correctly!

I was at Clemson when he was finishing his career and had never heard of him before I came to Clemson.

Quite a treasure and man. He loved Clemson

Howard’s buried on Cemetery Hill, just above the stadium, in a spot he picked out himself.

"I want to be there so I can hear all them people cheering my Tigers on Saturdays.

"Then I won’t have to go to heaven. I’ll already be there."

"Buddy Gore up the middel for fo yards" I can't spell it the way Frank would have said it on the weekly highlights on tv. Frank was a peach and I will always cherish my young days going to the 1:00 games with my grandparents. When you were 10-12, the score really didn't matter, it was experience.

Another Frank Howard Story

10

Oct 5, 2023, 12:07 PM

Frank Howard is somewhat responsible for my attending Clemson. My uncle, who was on the faculty at the time, and my aunt who was my mother's sister, shared a duplex in the married housing with Frank Howard and his wife when they all were newlyweds in the 1930's. Frank Howard was an assistant coach at that time under Jess Neely. My aunt and uncle loved Frank Howard and his wife, and they inculcated me with Clemson values when I was a youngster, and they took me to my first Clemson/USC game when I was around 12 or 13 years old. Frank Howard was still the coach at that point. Years later when I got married on December 30, 1977, my aunt and uncle did not attend my weeding, because they went to the ill-fated Gator Bowl with Frank Howard and his wife. As a Tiger fan, I considered their absence to be a excused absence. Long live the memory of Frank Howard.

I lived in Birmingham from 84-86 and listened to talk radio with Eli Gold. When Eli did racing on Tuesday his fill on was Paul Finrbaum. Finebaum was not popular because of his constant put downs of Alabama under Ray Perkins.
One Tues with Paul subbing Coach Howard was the the guest as he was being inducted into the Alabama hall of fame.
He tied Finebaum in knots with his answers.
I remember Finebaum commented about him being from Alabama.
He said that’s right Pawwl.
I was born in Barlow Bend which is about a wagon greasing out of mobile.
It was a blast to hear him.
Everyone loved him.

I read in a book onetime where Coach Howard filled in for Danny at the Virginia Game in Charlottesville because of something that happened the year before in Clemson where Danny couldn't be on the field. At the time Clemson was like 30-0 against Virginia. One of the frat boys from Virginia was yelling at Coach Howard as they were coming out on the field saying something to the effect "This year is the year we are going get you old man" Coach Howard yelled back "That's what your Granddaddy used to say too"

Had Coach Howard and Jerry Clower at a fund raiser for the Berkeley Clemson Club. I had breakfast with the two of them and Mrs Howard the next morning. Howard told about Red Horton who owned a seed and fertilizer warehouse in Loris would add $10 onto the farmers bill when they bought fertilizer and IPTAY would show on the invoice. That way he got lots of new members. Many of the farmers would come in the next year to buy fertilizer and say”Red please sell me some more of that IPTAY, I had the best crop ever last year.”
