I "gladly stand up" and raise my hand as one who can't stand that song.... Sure it was OK the first hundred thousand f**king times I had to sit through it at practically EVERY military/"patriotic" function I attended in my 27 years on active duty.
If I were a POW and the enemy wanted to break me - simply put me in a cell, and pump that d.a.m.n.e.d song into the cell on a non-stop continuous loop. No need to blast it into the cell - it could even be playing at a barley audible level.... Within 24 hours I'd be screaming for mercy and willing to do anything to make it stop...
The lyric that just grates my nerves to no end is that "I'd gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today".... Well Lee... I never saw you volunteering for military service in Vietnam or any other time...
That's an awful easy line to say when you have never had to put your own a.s.s in harms way. Reminds me of all the bumper sticker patriotism where all these G.W. Bush war supporters came out of the woodwork but didn't dare join up themselves or want their kids to participate in that mess. To actually commit to the defense of our nation is so much more than a plea to emotion and certainly more than a trite rhyming line in a song.
Please accept that I'm not demeaning those who never served - military service is not for everyone and nor should everyone be expected to serve in the military. I'm also very appreciate of the support I have received from the American public through my time in the service. But Lee Greenwood has ridden this one hit wonder for 40 years and it is has been overplayed to such a degree that I lose my freaking mind over it....

the USA has had since before the American Revolution. The only reason my family missed WWI and Vietnam was there were no military aged males at the time (too old or too young). My father was a Korean War vet, my uncle (his brother) a WWII vet, my sister was career Navy, my older brother-in-law an active Army Blackhawk pilot when I was in HS...so with all those connections/influences it was almost a certainty I would give the military a try during/after college.
As it turned out I took to the military culture and was fairly successful at it. The longer I was in the more and more I hated the military bravado "tough talk" by outsiders - particularly those in entertainment who had never put the uniform on. There are plenty of ways to show appreciation and pay homage to the toughness of our vets and the sacrifices of the fallen without reducing it to a false bravado of "we'll kick your a.s.s.". It is highly annoying to those of us who understand what war really involves.
I especially abhor the DC warhawk political class whose tough talk was mostly followed by a severe absence of skin in the game. Other than McCain and Pence, the family trees from most of our political class showed a severe absence of military service. The political elites certainly didn't mind the tough talk with other people's kids being the ultimate bill payer - but their own children/relatives - heck no. Fighting a war was beneath their Ivy league educated kids who were all being groomed to be the next generation of elite DC swamp "policy" makers. There was simply no way that 99% of our political class wanted any of their offspring to be in a position to actually pay the ultimate price for their ill advised "democracy at the point of a gun" foreign entanglements...

Agree with your stance on both the song, Greenwood, and military service, but I do have ask: what were we protecting America from in Vietman? That still appears to be one big bipartisan political #### up that put a generation of young men through hell.
Also, I can’t stand when one of those pseudo patriots you described pretends to "love the troops" but then later attacks them for their political beliefs, like some people did with John McCain.
