Judge Keller - This didn’t age well

He reminds me of people that were fanatical at defending Tommy Bowden. I remember people vociferously defending Larry Shyatt! Those people clearly were on drugs or drunk! There was no defending that clown! I remember people defending Jack as the baseball program continued to visibly decline and struggle, and then Monte.

I never understand people who think someone that has been struggling for years is suddenly going to turn things around. That could happen, sometimes in your personal life if you’ve had a series of bad luck, or struggling with drugs or alcohol and get help, but when you’re dealing with something like a sports team and you’re not getting it done year after year after year it’s nuts to think that person is suddenly going to turn things around. It happens every now and then. There are a few exceptions. But those are rare, those are far and few between.

And in pretty much all of those situations there were a little things that you could point to and see progress was being made, even if it wasn’t showing up yet in the win/loss column. But there has never ever been anything about Clemson basketball to make you think we have turned the corner.

For example, some of us were cautiously optimistic at the halfway point in the season, because we recognize that the ACC is water down and has been historically bad for a few years. And we lost games early in the season that should’ve been easy wins. And we weren’t exactly blowing out bad teams even at home. We look very poorly coached on the court. we still do things that we did in the past like 10 minutes without scoring a basket against bad teams.

Honestly, the only thing I can look at that has gotten better at Clemson over the past 10 to 12 years is a free-throw shooting. Yet, even now, in really close games when we absolutely positively need to make every free-throw we come up short. Our own announcers have pointed that out during our games.

But things are different this time. Brad Brownell‘s post game press conference was an embarrassment. It was nothing but a bunch of lame excuses. And frankly he exposed himself as a coach.

Dabo and Danny Ford, even Monte, would’ve made a very simple statement before taking questions . They would’ve said this game was an embarrassment, this game was an epic failure and the blame lies 100% on my shoulders. It’s my job as head coach to get this team prepared and we were not prepared! This game was my fault. Do you have any questions?

But instead he made a bunch of lame excuses and truly exposed himself as a coach. Some examples…..

“We're not as athletic as some of the teams we play in this league.”

Brad, Louisville only had three wins going into last night. Their net ranking is well over 300. They are a very bad team. But your excuse is they were more athletic than we were?

“ We have to be tougher and we have to be smarter and we just weren't quite either one tonight.”

Brad, this is a team full of veterans. We have quite a few transfers. Our point guard is 25 years old. This is a very experienced basketball team which is one of the reasons the expectations were so high for this year along with the state of the ACC. If this team doesn’t have those qualities by now, when are they? And whose responsibility is it to instill those qualities? I don’t know, maybe the head coach?

“That's hard because you're going to have nights you don't shoot it.”

Brad, we have a problem shooting the three consistently. That’s why nearly every game we go 5 to 10 minutes without scoring a basket regardless of the competition. There’s an expression, live by the three, die by the three. When the three isn’t falling a good coach adapts and adjusts and his 25-year-old point guard drive to the basket. When a team has one of the highest free-throw shooting percentages in the country you play half court basketball and feed the ball inside. Get the other team in foul trouble and go to the free-throw line. I don’t know, maybe play some half court offense? You’re supposed to be an X’s and O’s coach. at least that’s what the experts on this forum keep telling me. Doesn’t that mean understanding half court basketball? Doesn’t that mean understanding how to make adjustments?

Finally, this statement. I honestly can’t believe he admitted this in a press conference. This statement alone should get Brad Brownell fired. Because clearly he has lost his team and does not have control of his players.

“I've been fighting our guys some -- I love them but there are times we …. panic …. and shoot quick threes …..And it's probably especially true on the road”

Translation: Brad Brownell doesn’t have control of his team. And despite being a team of mature, experienced players, including a 25-year-old point guard, his players don’t play with discipline and control And don’t listen to him on the court.

Translation: the players don’t respect him and don’t trust him as a coach. If they did, they would listen to him.

Well, Brad, whose fault is that? How many times do you take a player out of the game and sit him on the beach for a few minutes when he’s not listening to you on the court? How many times do you take a player out and sit him on the bench when he’s out of control on the court? Other coaches do it all the time. But I don’t see you doing it. And if a team this mature and experienced this late in the season still has these problems whose fault is that? Maybe the head coach?

I have heard a lot of embarrassing press conferences by Brad Brownell, but last night was the show stopper. The performance of Clemson basketball last night against an atrocious Louisville team was completely unacceptable by anyone’s standards. Yet rather than be a man and accept responsibility he made incredibly stupid excuses And exposed himself as a terrible coach. A coach that is in his own words is fighting and struggling with his players. He clearly doesn’t have command of his team and the respect of his players.

I can’t wait to see Judge Keller’s excuses this time! Things truly have reached a point where you look foolish trying to defend Brad Brownell and this basketball program. The man himself is saying incredibly stupid things that should get him fired. He’s admitting he doesn’t have control of his own basketball team. That his players don’t listen to him.

So yea, this didn’t age well ….

The sad truth is, they are more athletic than us.

Our whole thing is contingent upon taking a bunch of relatively unathletic 3-star guys and hoping we can get them to play their ##### off, and hope that we get the secret sauce just right, all in a way that results in some magic and we can somehow get on a roll from time to time and pull out some big wins.

That is NOT the way to build a basketball program, but that's exactly what we've done for 13 years.

True, but it’s a terrible team!

Here is the true irony of the current state of Clemson basketball. For years we had teams that were insanely athletic. Guys that were amazing athletes that could run and jump like crazy. They could race up and down the court. But they weren’t good basketball players. That’s why for years we were atrocious at free-throw shooting. And what was our excuse whenever we lost to bad teams back then? We have a team full of athletes, but no real basketball players.

Now we have a team with a lot of good basketball players. We have some quality players. And they’re not un-athletic. Those guys are pretty darn athletic. But not to the level we had before. But these guys can play basketball and it’s why we are the best free-throw shooting team in the conference and top five in the country. Because we actually have basketball players now. But when we lose to bad teams now what is the excuse? We’re not athletic enough.

You can’t make this #### up! It’s hilarious at this point!

This is mid major basketball. Shoot 3s and if they go in, you win. But they don’t with consistency.

And that one win took a three-point shot at the buzzer

And the losses were unacceptable. A bad Boston College, a blowout against an unranked North Carolina team that has no identity and is in disarray, and then that complete fiasco last night against one of the worst teams in the country. And of course the Miami loss. They’re a pretty good team, but that game was at home and we played like absolute garbage. At home!

Joy Keller is just here to troll.

Her Brownell pumping is because she doesn't like Clemson fans, that's pretty clear. The underlying theme of pretty much her whole existence on here is that our fans aren't worthy of good basketball because footballs brains. We can't appreciate Brad because we're not smart enough to do so, and she has essays and fine tuned stats to prove it.

Joy Keller could not care less about the fortunes of any Clemson sports program. She does care to find anything she can to spin on here that agitates fans, though, with some form of shade attached.

Go Tigers!
