because it turned into a situation where the big money teams (eg. Hendrick) could essentially buy their wins/championships and the France family's push to mainstream the sport turned every driver into a boring corporate cookie cutter clone of one another. When NASCAR got rid of the smaller venues to chase the big city and corporate dollars they also got rid of the personality, competitiveness, and rough edges that made NASCAR fun to watch.

races and every so often I'd find a driver I liked (Rusty Wallace, for one) and kept up with casually. I remember thought that Bristol used to be like the redneck Masters tournament. You couldn't get a ticket to that SOB and if you did, you were paying thousands of dollars to go---it was a big deal. Now, they can't give tickets away to that race.
