and wanted to see if it fit your view

"The young parents here that drop so much money, that they don’t have, all hit the wall when kid 2 or 3 comes on board. The money becomes unsustainable and one parent is in one town paying for a hotel while the other is somewhere else…….

What do you think happens then?. Miss Susie starts gettin raw dawgged by Steve the rich divorced doctor, while poor Mark is feeling guilty for the blow job he got from the plump single mom."

Particularly the ones who got married early. Got that little bit of wonder about what else is out there, coupled with the opportunity to find out...Makes sense.

I think the parents really into travel ball are somewhat broken in the first place. Maybe it's kind of like the Crossfit people ($1 to Obed)....The other parents have no hobbies...You have no hobbies. They've got a rocky marriage, so do you. Just naturally happens.

I paid about $40k over 4-5 years for my daughter to get about 5x in scholly. I’m an outlier in that I got actual ROI from my investment, and I can say unequivocally that if she hadn’t played travel ball, no college offer.

Most people pay a lot more than I paid and get a ton less (if any) than I got. They represent 95% of travel ball and it’s a sham more often than not. You’ve gotta keep your head on a swivel and be able to recognize the snakes.

Most parents who throw a ton of money they don’t have at travel sports are doing it because some “coach” told them they were good enough for the next level, period. Are there some just seeking better competition for fun and frivolity? Sure. But when it gets to $1000 plus a weekend all but the wealthiest of those folks drop out.

Football and to a lesser extent, basketball have legit next level recruiters who are willing to find the hidden gems, but I hate to think how many talented kids don’t get a sniff at other sports opportunities because they didn’t have the family resources required to jump through the hoops required to get noticed.

I think it’s a combination of adults monetizing kids sports in a pretty disgusting way, and college coaches being entirely lazy when it comes to recruiting.

introduce your kids to weed and electric guitars. The only travel you have to do then is the rare occasion you'll drive down to the local youth center for a battle of the bands...maybe once a year. The cost of your kid getting stoned in the garage and upsetting the HOA with LOUD rock and roll is far, far less than investing in travel sports.

Yes, baseball got D1 offers and draft interest for kids that weren't playing travel ball.

High school baseball keeps stats that are available online and my kid got minor college interest every season his numbers were good. Minor interest like postcards saying "If you have any interest in our school let us know."

I can only speak about baseball, but travel ball makes 0 difference in college offers or potential for being drafted.

We had MLB scouts at our baseball games. They mostly weren't going to travel ball tournaments and if they were it wouldn't have been anything other than HS Jr/Sr competition.

We both have been out of it for years, but he's got grandkids that are starting to play and he said that he was considering going back to coach (and I hope he does, because he was always one of the good ones who was the there to teach the game and not do everything in his power to elevate his own kid). He was telling me that Rock Hill had dropped everything from 13-year-olds and up because all those kids were now playing travel ball. He further said that to schedule enough teams, Rock Hill now had to play regular season games with Tega Cay and Fort Mill teams to build a worthwhile schedule. Back when I coached, Rock Hill, Tega Cay, and Fort Mill ALL had thriving baseball programs from t-ball to high school Dxixie Majors, and the only time you played cross-league games was either pre-season exhibitions or fall league games. Travel ball back then was starting to explode, and more times than not it was because dads whose kids weren't getting all the playing time or weren't on teams good enough to win city championships were starting their own teams. They would tell you that it was to play against better competition so their kids could get college scholarships and such, but I can count on one hand the kids from Rock Hill that got that far, and only ONE that played at the D1 level. Mostly they were doing it so their kids with two left feet and tyrannosaurus rex arms could pitch or play shortstop for 9 innings.

Obed® and the D1 kid I mentioned above might be the only people I know who saw any kind of return on investment by playing travel ball. Most of the kids I knew who broke away from the city leagues early on burned out before they graduated high school. For that matter, I question the coaching a lot of those kids got back then. I think the high school coaches around Rock Hill now sponsor some travel ball teams that serve as feeders into the high school program, so at least those kids ARE getting some professional coaching. All in all, I'm not a huge fan of the travel thing.

also.

Daughter made the team as a manager, not dressing for any games but got to practice all season. She was one of two girls who didn't play club ball. The other one was also a manager. Coach said she has a great shot to make it next year as an 8th grader, but she will be an outlier if that happens.

That is why she is in club volleyball, just so she can make the Middle School teams and eventually High School.

it was a home tournament so no big deal for us, but wow some of those parents take this stuff really seriously.

My son has been blessed to have a really good coach take interest in developing him as a kid and a player. He organizes a travel team, but he does a good job of trying to keep it affordable. My kid is not going to go pro in baseball, he's just a 9 year old boy who likes playing baseball with his buddies. I'm a firm believer that kids need something, whether it be a sport or a hobby that they are interested in.

First of all, the opposing teams were all dressed like they were in the pros and not little league. They all had bags full of $300-400 bats, and these are 8-10 year olds. They all had $90 sliding gloves (they look like oven mitts?)

I know on our team there are a lot of hard working blue collar families. I'm not sure how they afford this stuff for junior. It like like they put everything they've got into baseball.

both my daughter's 13U Volleyball Tournaments and sons 10U Soccer tourneys. I assume they take those back and do game film review with the kids.

At the Volleyball tourney, the Dad taping had an app on his phone which kept score and every point he would flash it into the screen recording so I guess he could keep track better. The other teams not playing do the scorekeeping and some refereeing, those parents would get VERY mad at some 12 year old girls.

To send to coaches, but I didn’t do it until she was in the recruiting window. I’ve seen people doing every game from 10 years old onwards. It’s insane.

Have also seen people with easy $5-10k video rigs, 20 foot remote control camera poles, and more than a few with a camera mount that tracks a gps chip on your kid, so it’s aiming the camera on your kid the entire game. People are nuuuuuts.

Full stop. It also needs to be relevant and current film, so not much value in film from 14-15 years old and younger.

Those filming 9 and 10 year olds will have a miserable sports experience and will be out of whatever sport they are in by about 13. Overbearing parent, burned out kid, etc.

An 8 year old boys soccer team (all hispanic) I saw recently....had 2 dudes standing behind a camera on a tripod at the halfway line on the coach/player side of the field. Both had earphones/mic and hand written notes that I assume included the player names and numbers.

Shid was LIVE STREAMING with LIVE COMMENTARY to include GOALGOALGOALGOALGOAL when they scored.

Post game they interviewed the coach and a few of the boys.

LOVE the passion, but HATE to see that kind of passion around 7-8 year olds. Not sure how sustainable that is for total player development.

I've also seen similar setups at older ages. I suppose it is our culture but I'm not sure I love it.

At least in baseball, the money the parents spend on matching equipment which can be hundreds is one of the ways that coaches try to keep from having their players poached because the customized bat bag and jacket from the current team won't be used if the kid switches teams.

Not sure it works, but that's definitely part of it.

We used to laugh at those teams because they never played up to the level of their equipment but they sure looked good.

She just liked playing and no illusions she was going to play in college, but one of the kids on her team was a legit D1 prospect with offers from Pat Summit, Duke, UCONN, etc. When she would miss a game, the other parents would be pissed, because all the college scouts would leave, reducing the exposure the also rans were getting.
