An overlooked nugget in the deep passing game issues.

So a lot of people are calling out KB for the deep passing game problems and the missed throws. Also the high throws on some other passes as well.
I was remembering that KB was sharper on these throws earlier in the season, and that some media folks were even going as far as to say he might be better than Watson (that was just crazy talk). But what I also realized is that it seems to me that these "issues" seem to start after KB had the concussion in the Syracuse game. I also remember KB saying in an interview that being knocked out did give him some pause and it's natural to think about it.
My point is, maybe this kid is a little nervous about getting hit hard again in the pocket and maybe thinking just a little too much on the passes.

That and the ankle

Before he hurt his ankle, he ran harder and was connecting on throws to RR3 that DW4 couldn't make. Maybe the ankle's healed, maybe not as good as we've been told. They aren't gonna tell us. Other teams would just go after it more than they already do.

Concussions can effect eye sight , depth perception . He may clear up. Receivers running inaccurate routes will make a QB look inaccurate also. RayRay is a more accurate deep route runner. I still believe this team could run the 49er dink and dump short passing game with a occasional QB scramble (not called run ) thrown in .

I'd totally agree but then we'd both be overlooking the...

fact that he puts his head down and throttles defenders when he wants an extra yard. As MMMTTTT said, his ankle is not 100% and that's messing with his ability to vertically locate a pass. His arm slot isn't perfect so the ankle also dics with his horizontal location control too.
A couple weeks might not help but I believe he will get plenty of time to heal between now and the first round of the PO. I expect those who want a Johnson will get it Saturday.

what cannot be overlooked are the passes that

actually hit receivers in their hands that are dropped on deep routes... and there are going to be occasional dropped balls by any receiver, but two of our three primary guys are only making a minimal number of contested catches AND not catching uncontested balls as well... we have had way more drops this year than in the past few years... it's not all on KB's ball placement because he has sure missed passes, but there are just as many catchable balls not caught as there are balls that are inaccurately thrown...

It's difficult to catch a ball when you're being mugged.

sometimes the DB does make a good play on the ball to break it up. i don't really agree with naming college players, but primary receiver #1 has had multiple drops in the last 5 games, really catchable balls that at least hit him in the hands but he just doesn't get the squeeze on the ball to pull it in, like this one where the DB fell and left PR#1 to walk into the endzone... https://youtu.be/hJs61AHnPpE?t=1h51m49s

Also with his ankle he may not step into his throws as well. He has still been pretty dang good.

To me, it's no Mike Williams

there have been 8-10 deep balls that Williams pulls down in contested situations that Cain and McCleod simply don't. Williams on contested balls won 80% of the time. He was a freak at high pointing and getting position through adjustments in the air.
Sure Kelly has missed some, some badly. So did Deshaun. But not having that jump ball guy has severely limited our downfield passing. And before people say why not Overton or Higgins. They are a true sophomore and freshman. Mike wasn't getting those throws consistently until he was a fourth year junior. It will come for those guys, but not having that guy this year is the biggest reason we've lacked the down field passing game

issue. Nothing to be alarmed at, I think our coaching staff will help him along with it.
The future is so bright we gotta wear shades!
