Alums have more clout when they talk about issues

relating to their school with the general public if they keep up with things at their school. Just the way it is. Of course an alum that doesn't care about sports, or doesn't know the name of the coach isn't going to have any clout with other people- but is also less likely to be engaging in a conversation about those topics anyway.

Non alums may not like that, but it's true in college sports, and it's true in all sorts of things in life.

When someone has actually invested their time and energy into the core function of a college, they are going to be given more respect by the general public when talking about those issues.
