I think anyone expecting recovery of any human remains

13

Jun 24, 2023, 9:28 AM

from this Titan submersible disaster will be disappointed. Again, doing the math:

Pressure at that depth was 5,419 psi. The craft they were in had a diameter of ~7 feet. In a catastrophic implosion, the water under that 5419 psi pressure would rush in from all sides simultaneously, compressing the people inside. This would produce a hydraulic "Hammer", hitting them from ~36" away, equivalent to over 97.5 TONS per square inch, over EVERY square inch of their bodies. They would literally have been pulverized to bits. That is a horrible picture to contemplate, but, it also means their death would have been as close to instantaneous as could be possible.

People are free to spend their money however they please, but I personally would have stayed away from the known gravesite of over 1500 souls. These same people could have gotten a much better look at the wreck via ROV footage than they ever would looking out of a 20" viewport one at a time. Now, instead, they are part of that graveyard, although like their contemporaries from 1912, if anything is found of them at all, it will probably only be clothes and shoes.

Then again, there are a lot of dumbs out there in the world.

On the bright side you got to use your maths this morning. +1

Sorry for the folks in the Sub but they knew the risk up front. Life goes on. I, personally, would not have been a candidate for passenger on the sub because I knew the risk up front. I feel the same way about taking a trip on Musk's plane to outer space. I'm not gonna accept his offer to fly because I understand the risk. Now, I admire other people who take the risk. It's not for me. Traveling on I-26 between Columbia and Charleston is enough of a risk for me at this point in life. Go Tigers.

Not that it matters, but why did you multiply 5,419 psi by a distance of 36 inches to come up with 97.5 tons per sq in?

That doesn’t make any sense and 5,419 psi is sufficient.

people inside. The fact that the water would be moving, FAST, in an implosion is what results in the "force multiplier". If you ever turned off the water real fast in an older house with metal pipes, that THUMP-ump-mp you heard is a small hydraulic hammer. Moving water (or any other liquid) doesn't like being stopped suddenly.

As a deep diver and cave diver, your theory is correct but application terribly flawed. The airspaces in the human body compress. The fluid does not. The body being 90% water, does not implode, compress, or get blown to bits. The airspaces implode but rest of body remains intact.

Used to cave dive in the late 70's till early 90's in North Florida and 2 trip to the Yucatan. Where do you dive?

Carbon fiber doesn't bend, it shatters. That method of

1

construction is what raised red flags with people who made other, metal based submersibles. As Robert Ballard, who originally discovered the Titanic in 1985 said yesterday, this investigation will be a first, as no one has ever lost a manned deep dive submersible before, going all the way back to the Trieste in 1960.

Edit: Really THIN carbon fiber has a little flex to it. Very little, but some. But, the thicknesses required to withstand that kind of pressure would not flex at all.

Sounds like that sub had possibly been weakened by multiple trips. If I’m paying 250,000 I want to be in a real sub. Think they knew early on it had imploded. 10,000 sq miles you would think they would have found something fairly quick if it had indeed stayed intact. They never felt a thing with that kind of pressure.

I seriously doubt anyone was ever in that sub. I suspect there was a significant amount of life insurance policies recently taken out, they snuck out of the sub at around 5 ft depth , swam to an awaiting raft that took them to a bigger boat which then took them to an awaiting Malaysian flight .

That seems to be the most logical answer I’ve come up with yet

Been trying not to laugh at the news media reports talking about possible survivors, or finding human remains.

Goes to show how dumb news reporters are these days. To your point, there was never a possibility of either. The math is scary alright.
