Bama clearly off their first choice list and that means the likelihood of a clown show in Tuscaloosa is rising.

I continue to think Dabo would be a terrible fit there. And you should never follow a legend.
I wonder if the Bama AD asked if Dabo would be willing to go all in on NIL/Transfers?

Right? 8-4 with a loss to SMU is amazing. Kind of like the old days with Bowden and Maryland.

I've always maintained that Dabo's methodology has to have a very specific fit, and Alabama ain't it. That would have been the case if Saban had retired in 2018, and not just since the portal/NIL era took hold.

I'm pretty sure those words would have exactly zero impact on who they select to run that program.
It's a really big time deal for innernet warriors, prolly notsomuch to an AD trying to find the right guy to run a hundy+ milly blue blood program.

and the whole State in ways that are hard to grasp.
Similar to Dabo's impact on Clemson real estate, except in Bammer it's the success of all of the athletics, School and State are reliant on a championship winning FB team.

will play a factor in their hire. It is part of the game now. To not consider that would be like not considering a coach's recruiting ability.
Like RH Tig said, imo, Dabo was a bad fit with Bama pre-NIL/Portal. And, for the record, I think that incompatibility speaks very well of Dabo. Dabo doesn't like moving coaches kids off scholarship. Bama cuts kids that get injured. They are two totally different philosophies.

nothing like what Bammer is used to, and if I'm honest I don't think it plays well there.
This said, I'd have to think that CDS would be a top target for them and could also see why CDS wouldn't want to take the job.
But no, I don't think NIL and portal would be much of a factor. NIL isn't really (at least the way it's supposed to work) much for the coach to deal with.
The "portal" is a miniscule detail in the grand scheme of things. That is unless you are some 1-10 program that's never won jackshid and the program is looking for success come hook or crook.

I want Dabo to get completely ignored by Bama in this process, so that he gets pizzzed off in a way that makes the Tyler call look tame. Insulted chip on shoulder Dabo is best Dabo.

and 4-5 years from now, swoops in and restores the Bama glory.
He keeps pulling in $10+ large/yr in Clemson, and by 2029, desperate Bama will pay him $25M/yr. All his boys are assistant coaches by then, so staff half complete on Day 1.

That Dabo asked for a stipulation in the Bama contract that required them to grant 10 walk-on spots for Alabama mega preachers' sons who weigh no more than 160 pounds and when Bama refused, he told them "Bless your heart and GFY."

If you are the Bama AD, how the h.e.l.l. do you convince a coach of stature or proven success to come in and follow Nick Saban - the best college football coach in the modern era if not all time? You are literally trying to find a replacement for that which is practically irreplaceable. No matter who you hire - they have an impossible fan base expectation that cannot (and won't) be met that will make their life miserable and will eventually poison the program.

Yeah, for those of us who don't live in that world, the 'Don't Follow A Legend' mantra seems like great advice. On the other hand, I don't think I want players on my team who are scared to come in and compete for their position, so why would I ever want a coach who is scared to come in and take the reigns of a program because it already has established success? I guarantee you that any coach worth his salt isn't thinking that way, and IF someone (like Dan Lanning) decides that's not the place for them, it's more likely because they see the roadmap of where they are pretty clearly and NOT because they're scared of 'following a legend'. Alabama won't end up being a Tennessee-style dumpster fire of a coaching search by any means, but I'm betting it's a tougher proposition because Alabama is going to start by working proven, high-level prospects who already have a good system in place where they already are. All that said...
I think this is going to fall down the line a few notches and they'll end up with Mike Norvell. Just a gut feeling, but Norvell is a ruthless type who probably works in Tuscaloosa, and given what we know about FSU spending big money to get out of the ACC on a budget that's been stretched this for well over a decade, on top of the precedent set by the committee this last year...I do believe he'd jump quicker than any of the other names we're reading in the media.

at least a bit.
I do think the 'Don't follow a legend' would apply to coaches who have already proven themselves and are in good situations (on this level that's pretty much just Dabo and Kirby). Because why risk it?
Somebody else like Norvell - and I like your reasoning for that - doesn't have those obstacles. He wants to prove himself and there is headwinds at FSU. So 'don't follow a legend' probably doesn't keep him from taking the job.

Kirby because money is the ONLY reason for them to move from where they are. While I don't find it totally out of the realm of possibility that someone from Alabama made some contact with either to gauge interest, I'm not sure that either was ever truly a target. That said, I doubt either of those guys would be scared to make that move IF conditions were right. Kirby probably could toss his hat into the ring for an NFL job and outpace what Alabama was offering if it was purely about paycheck. Maybe Dabo could be swayed with something akin to the doubling of his salary, but I kinda get the feeling that's not his primary motivator. Dabo and Kirby already ARE legends, and as you said, there really aren't any others out there quite yet. Harbaugh is the only guy I see who could join those ranks anytime soon if he opts to stay at Michigan.

so I think Bama would have to implode very quickly for Dabo to be interested in Bama, and Bama be interested in Dabo. Maybe once all of his kids have graduated there might be more pull, but I'm just not sold on that happening with either party. I think Dabo is here until he retires or fails miserably.
