Golf Clubs

Jul 17, 2022, 1:37 PM

After about a 6 year hiatus I feel the need to shut Bulldog up. I used to be somewhere between a 1 and 8 handicapper depending on the year and play frequency. However, I'm still hitting the 1996 Big Bertha irons from high school and a Ping G2 driver (2004). I discovered today that the grips are shot on the irons and I am considering a new set. Does anyone have or can recommend a decent set to get back into it? I'm not looking for the latest and greatest but I feel disadvantaged with 26 year old clubs. I have been out of the game long enough that i am not familiar with which clubs a good for the price. Usually play stiff shafts. I'm not looking to spend a lot. Offers and/or recommendations?

My advice is to go and get fitted. Don’t have to buy the top of the line, have seen guys playing the Wilson clubs and they love them. Just a suggestion but I play Taylor Made,

Agreed...get fitted

Taylor Made, Callaway, Ping, Titleist all make great equipment. I play Callaway, mostly and an old Ping Anser Putter. My drive and irons are 3 years old. Recommendation: graphite shafts are easier on your back, and they gave me additional yardage.

Perhaps more important than the club brand is the type of shaft you use. I would definitely recommend getting fitted for a set of clubs that match your game and swing speed.

I would also recommend going to a sporting goods store that has a simulator and get fitted. It would be worth it to know you have the right equipment for your body and swing.

Class of ‘71. Went through “rat season” and glad I did.

Don't make an expensive mistake.

Jul 17, 2022, 3:05 PM

I thought the same thing 4 years ago. I bought a new set of Callaway irons to replace my old Tommy Armour irons. After 3 years of "trying" to play the Callaways, I went back last year to my old Tommy Armour clubs. The only thing I regret is ever changing in the first place.
If I were you I would just try changing to an updated shaft before making my same mistake.

Put new grips on the old clubs and go play a little bit. You may decide you want to fish instead. Definitely get fitted by someone that knows strike point and what to do to correct your draw or slice by grip selection, shaft selection and head selection. They are all different combos to give you the best chance to grip it and rip it. Good luck!

I agree. Replacing the grips and playing with your old clubs to see how you hit them now would be my suggestion. If you hit the old clubs well but still want new ones, you may want to take 2 or 3 of your old irons with you to make sure the fitter gets the loft and lie angles to your liking. I know they can determine that at a fitting, but your clubs that you hit well will tell the tale. Having a 1 to 8 handicap in the past means you can hit the sweet spot and having a new set that doesn't get square at contact isn't going to help. No two manufacturers are the same.

I have always played Ping irons and Callaway woods. The i210’s are probably the best set of irons that I have personally hit, but about to pull the trigger on the i525’s. Lot of shaft variations on the woods so a fitting would really help get dialed in on a good combo. Irons I play standard black dots and will change out grips on my own so I quit getting fitted for those. Good luck usually some good clubs and sellers on eBay as well.

I just got fitted in Atlanta for a new set of PXG irons, woods, and utility clubs. I really like them, but I am not sure that I am playing any better than with my 15 years old Taylormades. Since I am a veteran, I did get them at almost half-price. I am having an awful time though hitting the driver, but I am sure at this point my swing is so out of whack I couldn't hit any driver.

If was going to get fitted, I would certainly play some so that when you are fitted you are comfortable with your swing. You do not want to get fitted when you are not swinging well.

Definitely get fitted. I like Ping and Titlest. Actually all the brands are all pretty solid clubs.

Get fitted for a driver as well. Hit one as a demo on the range or course if you can

Enjoy

I play Ben Hogan Icon Blades. Don’t let the word blade mess with your mind. These things have the sweetest sound and feel like butter. I like knowing if I’m hitting off the toe thin or whatever and it’s instant feedback. The price is great also for a great looking set of irons

Same here but mizuno blades with Taylor Made Driver, 3 and 5 woods (or metals now days). Instant feedback on contact and consistent distances.

X2 Taylormades are 4-5 years old, are very decent clubs you could buy used at a great price.

Go check out Sub70. They are direct to consumer and have a wide variety of clubs, from beginners to scratch. They will ship you demos and then you can custom order to your liking. They are a less expensive then going to the golf store, I just got my set this past week and they are sweet.

I'm playing a Srixon Zx5/Zx7 combo set of irons, great feel, good distance, overall a good set of irons.

I play the ZX5's and a ZX utility 3 iron, I absolutely love these clubs. I was a Mizuno guy until I got fitted for these. The 4 month wait for a set of Mizuno's to be built is what led me to consider these and I wouldn't change them for anything!

I had a similar story, although my handicap was higher. I

Jul 18, 2022, 8:00 AM

went the opposite way, putting down my original 1990 vintage Big Bertha irons, and looking around for a new set. I splurged on the latest, greatest thing, TaylorMade SIM2 irons and woods.

This was after going back in time and buying several vintage sets of irons off the ebay.

Ping Eye2 Green Dots, which I had played with for years prior to the Berthas.
Ping Eye2 Beryllium Copper Black Dots.
Even older, Wilson Staff Dynapower Irons.

Nothing really worked. I HAVE kept the SIM2 woods in the bag, after long experimentation, finally got to where I could hit them better than the old Taylormade R9's I was hitting when I first started back. Even there, I went through Ping G5, Ping G30, and Callaway Epic woods before finally settling on the TaylorMades. Did I mention I now have a golf club rack in my shop with about two hundred clubs in it? NOT an exaggeration, may even be short a hundred or so.

The upshot of the iron deal is that I found, to my chagrin, that I HAVE to hit an oversize iron now. With the whippy Senior shaft flex that I must use now to have even old man distance, one small wrong move with the smaller headed irons results in ye olde SHANK.

I need to put my near pristine set of SIM2 irons out on the ebay and try to recoup some of the fortune I spent to get them. But, at least I don't have to wonder if playing my old Bertha irons is a wise choice. I KNOW it is.

You said your grips are worn out. Get those things regripped with tan (midsize) Winn wrap type grips. Your hands will thank you.

Taylor Made M6 irons...

Jul 18, 2022, 9:53 AM

I have a buddy who just when through a similar renewed interest in the game. He purchased the M6 irons based on a recommendation for his club pro and he loves them. These irons hit the market three or four years ago so they’re not the latest and greatest model. That said, the newer models won't perform any better for you. They all hit the ball the same distance and are forgiving enough.

Bear in mind, as is the case with most cavity back irons, these aren't the best when it comes to shaping or controlling the ball, and the wedges don’t spin the ball all that much. However, the sweet spot on these irons is huge so it's really hard to miss-hit the ball (as long as you hit the face). If you simply want to hit the ball long and straight down the fairway, these irons are an excellent choice.
I’d recommend you get the 5-PW set. Get a hybrid instead of the longer irons and get a separate wedge set instead of the M6 wedges (I prefer Cleveland wedges).

A new set will run you between $600 and $700. A good used set would be even less. For the money, these irons are hard to beat IMO.

I have played for 60 years and owned many sets but the PXG’s out of Arizona are the best and not really expensive - you can’t go wrong and the company CEO is ex- marine!
