Kirby Smart as HC of UGA: QB recruiting bust

Did Kirby Smart (i.e., the Smart-est HC of all time) ever have a QB recruiting 'bust'?

Jacon Eason 5* QB for 2016 - - - Rivals #7 player overall / #2 QB overall: Kirby Smart's first QB recruit at UGA. Big guy with strong arm, allegedly smart and a good guy.

Here's Jacob Eason's QB stat line at UGA:

2016: Completions - 204 Atts - 370 TDs - 16 Ints - 8 QBR - 120.2
2017: Completions - 4 Atts - 7 TDs - 0 Ints - 0 QBR - 90.7 (J.Eason got beat out by Jake Fromm in 2017 season and then transferred to Washington; sat out 2018 season and had a good senior year).

1st Moral of the story: Sometimes the HS QB super stars don't translate into immediate College QB super stars.

2nd Moral of the story - - - Kenny Picket.
Kenny Pickett was a mediocre QB in his first 3 years as a starter. Each of his 1st 3 years he had TDs of 12 / 13 / 13 and Ints of 6 / 9 / 9 and QBR between 120 and 130.

For 2021 season K.Pickett had completions of 334, attempts of 497, TDs = 42, Ints - 7, QBR = 165.3

For us Clemson fans, let's not be premature by judging DJU as a 'bust' ... the sauce may need a little more time to cook before it's ready.

Fairly consistent rumor indicates we got Trevor Lawrence in no small part because TL16's parents were thoroughly unimpressed by how much cocaine Eason was doing at UGA. I talked to a coach who was a former GA at Washington and who knew Eason well...Eason did a lot better there because he was away from Athens and its many distractions, and a lot closer to his support system. (Eason was from the Pacific Northwest area.)

Kirby also completely whiffed on that Wake QB who transferred. And the latest fizzle was former 5-star transfer JT Daniels.

There is a culture problem at UGA, for sure. And it is not an easy place or system to be a QB.

Tough to be a QB at UGA with a stable of NFL RB’s behind you, arguably the best OL in the country, and multiple 5 stars at WR/TE?

UGA puts a ton of players into the NFL. That would seem to suggest they are recruiting and developing the right guys. How do you figure the culture issues only affect the QB position?

You put too much emphasis on stats.
Just ask which team is playing for the National Championship.
