After watching our offensive plays again versus GT it MAY be

Sep 23, 2021, 12:37 PM

that our problems on offense are much simpler than we think.

Couple of things I noticed:

1st QTR
1. Lyn J loss was a bad read by DJ. Leverage to the left with Davis Allen for DJ to keep it, but he gives it to Lyn J into the teeth of the D. LJ makes a bad decision instead of taking yard or two.
2. 3 possessions in the first quarter. 2 bad passes by DJ on third down on two of them. The other was a TD with mostly Shipley runs.

2nd QTR

1. 1st down back shoulder to Ngata. Bad pass, but Ngata not on same page.
2. Tate has no idea who to block and is tentative at best.
3. DJ does not carry out good fakes or use his eyes to set up screens. He's in too big of a hurry often.
4. All 3 WRs blocking on screen pass. No receiver steps back to receive it and DJ has to tuck and run.
5. 2nd & 8. Tate looks lost.
6. 4th and 2 shovel pass. Don't love the call, but the play is there to be made if Tate, the pulling guard, turns up into the hole like he should and blocks the defender. Instead, he shuffles out and touches no one.

3rd QTR

1. Tre Williams is fast and athletic. Going to be an excellent pass rusher.
2. Braden Galloway is very tentative in the blocking game, to put it mildly. Time to expand the rotation.
3. DJ is late on a pass all the way across the field to Ladson. Defender makes a bad play and interferes on what could have been a pick 6. Instead we get a first down.
4. 3rd and 4, DJ throws late off his back foot to Ross.
5. 2nd possession at 5:08 mark of 3rd. Own 14 yard line. We move the ball down to about the GT 24 yard line as the 3rd QTR expires. Tate looks better, but gives poor effort on block and his guy tackles Shipley on one play.

4th QTR

1. 1st play, DJ puts ball in wrong hand and fumbles! Ugh! GT ball and no points after long time consuming drive.
2. We move the ball, but DJ makes a terrible pass to a wide open Ngata on a play that would have been a big gainer and possible TD. Davis Allen is wide open down the sideline for a TD as well.

Over the course of the game, we had 8 penalties for 60 something yards. That's too many drives where penalties kept our defense on the field and took our offense off the field. Tate, I believe had 2 of the false starts.

DJ is spreading out his feet too wide which is making it hard for him to point his left shoulder towards the target, move in the pocket, explode up the field when the opportunity presents itself, and transfer his weight properly when he throws. He's throwing with his shoulders open often.

If we can get DJ and Tate to play a bit better and eliminate some stupid penalties on both sides of the ball, we'll see much better point production from our offense.

we were very spoiled with TL's arm and accuracy. It makes the comparison of differences all the more noticeable. DJ is young and improving. He is at a different stage of development versus TL at that age.

and mechanics because he was so much bigger and stronger than everybody, but not at this level.

He will, hopefully, follow the path of Tahj Boyd. TB had terrible footwork in the beginning. Remember the awkward play against FSU when he fumbled the ball that FSU picked off in mid-air?

I remember play but that isnt poor footwork. That is just being silly with the ball. At that point take the sack.

Love watching Sammy burn people!

Also, did anyone notice the play we used to run out the clock at the end?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

?? that was good for 6 seconds!

Sep 24, 2021, 8:17 AM

And yah, Sammy and TB had brilliant timing

Why was that not grounding? I didn't see a WR anywhere on

Sep 24, 2021, 8:26 AM [ in reply to Thanks for posting ]

the screen when the ball landed. Did they change the rule since then?

I saw grounding called in a game last weekend where the QB through a deep ball and the WR ran the wrong route. It wasn't intentional at all, but the refs called it because there wasn't a WR anywhere near the ball.

Agree we were spoiled with TL16. That said, dj5 was rated number 1 and considered instant impact starter. He's been in our system 18 months and now started 5 games and was in as backup quite a bit. Streeter/Elliott plenty of time to develop him. I'm still baffled why he looked better last year.

coming into this year. We aren't. Yet. I think that surprised everybody including our coaching staff.

We don't know what we're good at offensively. Certainly going into the GT game. We now know that Shipley and DJ in the running game are our strengths. Hopefully we can lean on them a bit until we can open some things up in the passing game as DJ gains confidence and our OL gels.

This post of yours hits on what I was thinking- what is our O idenitiy? So far we really dont have one. Last year we were balanced though I had hoped we could run it better. This year? It looks like running it based on GT.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-74tiger.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Me too. It’s not like he’s a true freshman who just enrolled last month.

And even if he were, I wouldn’t expect some of the mistakes he has made this year.

It’s just really odd.

Last year, the Tigers had a real slot receiver - Rodgers. Also, IMO, Powell made a difference. Not that he's any better than the WRs now, DJ knew where he was going to be.

Very good analysis. Despite what some people think our QB is inexperienced and so is our O line.

Re: After watching our offensive plays again versus GT it MAY be

Sep 23, 2021, 1:39 PM

Thanks for a sane look at a game... finally.

Have noticed DJ does not move his feet nor does he step into his throws when he is not throwing to his secondary receivers. He has such a big frame and strong arm he has gotten away with it. Surprised Streeter has not been working on that with him...

QB and receivers are in different zip codes sometimes... not sure if that is DJ or the receivers, I know receivers have reads and the QB has the same read, someone is missing in that department.

Linemen seem to be playing a little better week to week... they will get better as long as the coaches are seeing and correcting the mistakes... do the players actually change is the second half of that...

TE rotation is changed this week...

Finally having the Lyn J saga over should help the locker room...

GT 3-3 with overhangs was really effective for most of the game.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Looks like he regressed

Sep 23, 2021, 2:03 PM

You’re right about the footwork. The fact that he has plays where he drops back and never picks his feet up again should be reason enough to sit out a series or two. That’s ridiculous and if I’m Streeter I’d be in his ear because it’s making it look like he hasn’t been coached at all.

On your point about DJ and the WR’s not being on the same page, my money would be on it being a problem with DJ. The fact that it’s happening with almost every receiver points to it being the QB not remembering the routes. Hopefully they can keep coaching him and loving on him and pull a diamond out of all that sand at some point.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Certainly not all, but a good bit of what we've seen...

Sep 23, 2021, 1:41 PM

that is frustrating the pi$$ out of everyone is entirely and relatively easily correctable.

Another example was the toss sweep to Shipley. Great play right up to the point when Frank Ladson held unnecessarily. That not only negated the play, but backed-up the offense ten yards.

Exactly. We aren't going to eliminate all mistakes and

The whole speed of play have gone down like 90% in the past

Sep 23, 2021, 1:45 PM

5 yrs. If you watch us this yr, its like we're playing in mud. It takes forever to get a play in. Takes forever to snap it. Takes forever to get rid of the ball.

There is just zero rhythm to the offense and thats on the coaches.
They really want to help DJ out, speed up the play

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg2005_majors_champ.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-xtiger.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't get the impression that DJ is processing things

Sep 23, 2021, 1:51 PM

quick enough to do that, nor is the left guard. As DJ's confidence goes, so goes our offense.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I can see it. Good post

Sep 23, 2021, 1:45 PM

I’ve been thinking one quick easy fix is to give Davis Allen every rep at TE. He is by far the better blocker and until someone shows me video evidence to the contrary, he’s a better pass catcher.

The second east fix would be to stop calling RPO’s and let the offensive line actually have an idea of what they are trying to block for. I have no idea how you can ask an offensive line to block for potentially 3 different plays.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why are we not seeing Jaelyn Lay. He's huge and can

Sep 23, 2021, 2:01 PM

likely at least get in the way and catch better than #88. Or Sage Ennis or Jake Briningstool? BG is not really producing in the passing game or the running game. I don't see what we have to lose.

Good point about the RPOs. I think we see more willingness to attack in the running game Saturday the way you suggest. Perhaps DJ's success in the running game last week will give him more confidence in the RPO game to keep it when it's there and make things harder on the defense.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes

Sep 23, 2021, 2:11 PM [ in reply to Why are we not seeing Jaelyn Lay. He's huge and can ]

I don’t even need to see those other guys, Allen is darn good. He is very under appreciated and under estimated in the passing game. I think Tony Elliot could break tendency once or twice a game, call his number, and get a big play.

So far this season DJ has been unwilling to call his number in the RPO game or take off for 5-10 on broken plays and it really killed us in the UGA game. Those second half runs against GT looked like they were an effort by the coaching staff to shake something loose with him and hopefully it worked. If he hadn’t fumbled in the red zone that game looks and feels much different.

It seems to me if they are dropping 8, a short pass to a back or end just beyond our O line would give the backs a chance to shine in some space. There are gaping holes in the middle but DJ could not hit a receiver.Surely you have one QB that can throw a 15-20 yd pass accurately.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: After watching our offensive plays again versus GT it MAY be

Sep 24, 2021, 3:32 AM

We just need to play to our strengths. Run the ball with shipley, pace and DJ with the zone read. Take what the defense gives you and take your time. Seems like DJ is always looking for the home run. Sometimes you just got to grind them down until the defense starts to creep up. Excellent analysis by the way.
