Truly too bad his life and his mission were cut short. The world may have been a different place today.

To think about how many political people were killed during that time period.

I keep a copy of "Letter from Birmingham Jail" in my office and read it from time to time, when I want to be reminded that there is more that unites us than divides.

Re: A well-deserved shout-out to MLK … FBI / spied on MLK

2

Jan 16, 2023, 2:27 PM

As with everyone, MLK had his flaws.

His bravery and philosophies to make America better dramatically overshadowed his flaws.

Anyone remember how our trusted FBI was spying on MLK in hopes of digging up dirt and diminishing him?

Conspiracy theorist rubbish about a federal agency engaged in illegal activity regarding a private citizen? It’s ironic, despite the FBI’s devolution from the MLK days to a politically partisan, corrupt ‘law enforcement’ agency that plants concocted evidence on private citizens, has grown in stature as far as so many of today’s USA citizens are concerned.

MLK did not just have to deal with reactionary white racists and violent black organizations such Stokley Charmichael’s predecessor to the Black Panthers, he also had to contend with the USA’ federal law enforcement agency.

God has blessed us all by having MLK amongst us during his short life.

In the midst of a two plus hour drive to Greenville

yesterday, I happened upon a PBS radio station rebroadcasting MLK's speech he made during the Memphis Sanitation Workers strike in 1968. Absolutely no doubt the man was a riveting public speaker. Listening to that was a fascinating dive back into the history of the civil rights movement.

I took part in a little poll on MSN today. They asked how many people had either heard or read MLK's
"I Have a Dream" speech. Out of 157,000 respondents, a full 40% had never done either. Stunning !!

I don't know how you have any sense of who or how important he was without having heard that speech.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It was a real shame his life was cut short

1

He was a reluctant leader, who didn't seek his position and eventual power/influence. That's often the best kind of leader.

After he was killed, others who DID seek that position and influence/power put themselves into that vacuum and they just haven't been nearly the same types of leaders as King was.

King didn't seek his position and influence, but he appreciated the gravity of it and took it very seriously on behalf of those who had put him there. Others who have followed, unfortunately, not so much, and it has hurt the civil rights movement as a whole.

His death set back the civil rights movement 20 years. A lot of others picked up the torch, but none of them could hold a candle to MLK.
