A Tribute to a Good Old Dog

My boy Charlie didn't make it yesterday, it was time. Got him to the vet in a blanket but he couldn't stand up. Vet came in, felt his belly and let us know it was probably Hemangiosarcoma which had swollen his spleen to softball size and it had probably ruptured and he was bleeding internally. We have experienced this before with another Golden (FML) and she had he spleen removed before it ruptured but the cancer took her too. He went peacefully with me and my wife rubbing his belly.

He was 12, had his 12th birthday last saturday. We actually got him when my daughter was about 9 months old. My kids have always had Charlie around. He was a great dog! He didn't cuddle, he didn't give you kisses, but he LOVED to chase a tennis ball and go for rides. Problem was, he had terrible balance and couldn't stand up in the truck with his head out the window, fell all over the back seat.

Charlie's breath stank. Always, even after cleanings. My kids HATED that he would breathe on them in the car with some stank breath. I'll miss that stinky breath. Charlie loved to swim, too. When we moved here, he was starting to be unstable in his back hips. First time we went to the beach, he took off into the water, mid-January in the cold, and I was scared I would have to rescue him but he got his back legs going and was fine.

Charlie loved the kids. Like I said, he wasn't affectionate, but he made sure he was always near the kids. He was always checking on them and making sure they were OK.

Anyways, I could go on and on about this dog, but I needed to get this off my chest. Charlie was named for Charles Hatfield, the "rainmaker" who San Diego hired to bring rain to their area and get rid of the drought. Widespread Panic wrote a great song about it, hence where we get it from. Also, named partly after the Grateful Dead song Cosmic Charlie.

Pour one out for a good dog, gonna miss him.

Sorry about Charlie. We don't deserve the unconditional love and loyalty

that dogs give us for their short time with us, but dang it's great. Sorry for your loss. They really are family members and it hurts when we lose them.

Men at 25 play football. Men at 40 play tennis. Men at 60 play golf. Have you noticed as men get older their balls get smaller.

I'm so sorry to hear that.

Few things on this Earth are worse than the loss of a beloved family member. Sending my vibes to the Greenr clan this morning.

Now you see him and he runs up fast
Kicks at the air his friends watch him fall and then laugh
Charlie really likes his friends
But in his heart he knows that sometimes a DOG is as GOOD as any man.

I had an old lot shirt with that on it, snoopy on the back, IIRC

Heartbreaking. Luckily he had you. I lost a dog a few weeks ago and still get choked up here and there if I take the time to think about her. Anyway, I relate. Great pics. Sorry for your loss of course.

“… think of him as living
In the hearts of those he touched
For nothing loved is ever lost –
And he was loved so much.”

"We who choose to surround ourselves
with lives even more temporary than our
own, live within a fragile circle;
easily and often breached.
Unable to accept its awful gaps,
we would still live no other way.
We cherish memory as the only
certain immortality, never fully
understanding the necessary plan.”

Go softly into the fields of memories, old fella.

We lost a dog to the same cancer several years ago, and she is surely missed.

Lost 2 Goldens to cancer over the years, one at 5 years old (in case you were wondering how to make it suck even more), but man...wouldn't trade any of the grief if it meant not knowing them. I hope there's a giant field of Goldens frollicking somewhere in the skies. Godspeed, Charlie.

Near this Spot
are deposited the Remains of one
who possessed Beauty without Vanity,
Strength without Insolence,
Courage without Ferocity,
and all the virtues of Man without his Vices.
This praise, which would be unmeaning Flattery
if inscribed over human Ashes,
is but a just tribute to the Memory of
Charlie, a Dog

So Sorry Man

1

Nov 8, 2023, 5:45 PM

Reading that leaves me with a lump in my throat.

Dogs are simply wonderful creatures and we are not worthy of them.

I was away from the house for most of the day. When I drove up, my Boykin met me at the gate and would not have been more overjoyed if she was in the presence of God. My wife was glad to see me too, but wasn't even in the same league as my dog.

I've put down 3 dogs in the last 25-30 years and if a man can do that without crying at some point, he's a cold hearted SOB. It hurts bad even if you know it's the kind and right thing to do.

Here's to lots of good memories and laughs in the future as you think back on Charlie.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

youre a good boy charlie
