A thought about players sitting out bowl games.

Assume you are a coach and your team is going to a bowl. Assume that bowl is not part of the playoffs (4 teams this year, 12 next year). Example: Your team is heading to the Citrus Bowl.

That means you get 15 practices to prepare for the bowl. All coaches will tell you that those practices are very important because they can be used to prepare for next year and get the young guys more reps as well as give the coaches more information about the players going into Spring practices.

Now, we all remember the "good ole days" when a bowl game was considered a "reward" for a good season.

So, given that, It would seem reasonable for a coach to develop the following plan.

1. Seniors - Playing in the bowl game is optional. You can go on the trip with us if you want to. You can attend all the activities and have a great time. If you want to, you can come to practice and help coach the young guys in your position group. That is what I would hope you would do. We could use your help coaching the young guys getting them ready for this game and also for next year.

2. Seniors - If you want to play in the bowl game you can. If you want to play just because you love the game, great. If you want to play because you think it will help your draft status, great. We'll do whatever we can to help you.

3. Seniors - We love you. We appreciate all you've done for this team. The decision is yours. Just let us know quickly so we can plan accordingly.

"I don't suffer from insanity. I enjoy every minute of it."

i'd pull the filter and hit em up with all the reasons to play .. PLUS

My thoughts - You take a full scholarship you make all of the games including post season - should be a part of every athletes commitment!!!!

I'm not saying the player should tell the coach "I ain't playin'."

I'm just wondering if the coach couldn't have the attitude I presented as a hypothetical.

It actually seems like that is what is already happening.

One point of clarification.

Actually, 2 points.

1. I didn't mean to imply a coach should have that attitude. Just wondering if it would be reasonable for him to have that attitude. I can see arguments on both sides.

2. I actually thought of this way back in the 1980s, or maybe even 70s. Your team gets invited to the Tangerine Bowl (for example). Why not give the seniors "a Christmas gift" of letting them go to the game and have all the fun times without the 15 days of practice and hard work? Why not devote the entire practice time (all 15 days) as a "first half of Spring practice" getting ready for next year?

Just a thought.
