A quick defense of Newspring.

Jan 7, 2013, 11:16 AM

The worship style is not for everybody. The size is not for everybody. The organization is not for everybody. The operation/mission is not for everybody.

But, it has brought hundreds, if not thousands, of non-believers into the Church family. So, regardless of how you feel about Newspring as a whole, you should appreciate that thousands of lives have been saved.

/thatsall

edit: oh, and if you're not religious, you should be happy about the millions and millions that Newspring has dumped into their communities in order to help the poor, and needy.

Jan 7, 2013, 11:42 AM [ in reply to I appreciate the post. And you are correct, from what I have ]

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

well since we are talking about New Spring

Jan 7, 2013, 11:45 AM

I would say in this case, yes, it may be their "fault", but they didn't create this idea of the mega-church.

How big was the church at Jerusalem ? I would think it was large. Interesting though, there were no, Presbyterians, or Catholics or Lutherans or Baptists then......

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

the Catholics would say they were all Catholics

Jan 7, 2013, 11:54 AM

since Christ said he would build his Church starting with Peter, and Catholics believe Peter was the first pope.

right, but Peter was his bishop

Jan 7, 2013, 12:51 PM

and the bishops, because of the authority Christ gave them, have the doctrinal authority needed in order to have a catholic (universal) church. At least that's how I understand the Catholic version of apostolic succession.

Jan 7, 2013, 11:50 AM

Smallness is only one criteria.

Origins in sociology

Main article: Sociological classifications of religious movements

The concept of "cult" was introduced into sociological classification in 1932 by American sociologist Howard P. Becker as an expansion of German theologian Ernst Troeltsch's church-sect typology. Troeltsch's aim was to distinguish between three main types of religious behavior: churchly, sectarian and mystical. Becker created four categories out of Troeltsch's first two by splitting church into "ecclesia" and "denomination", and sect into "sect" and "cult".[3] Like Troeltsch's "mystical religion", Becker's cults were small religious groups lacking in organization and emphasizing the private nature of personal beliefs.[4]

Later formulations built on these characteristics while placing an additional emphasis on cults as deviant religious groups "deriving their inspiration from outside of the predominant religious culture".[5] This deviation is often thought to lead to a high degree of tension between the group and the more mainstream culture surrounding it, a characteristic shared with religious sects.[6] Sociologists still maintain that unlike sects, which are products of religious schism and therefore maintain a continuity with traditional beliefs and practices, "cults" arise spontaneously around novel beliefs and practices.[7]

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Mystical religion?

Jan 7, 2013, 11:53 AM

And this dude is basically saying that because their beliefs are different than others, its a cult.

Right.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

let me help you...

Jan 7, 2013, 12:00 PM

You seem to be confused about the need for a cult to fulfill more than one of the categories mentioned. Yes, cults are typically small, yes, their views are "innovative" and outside the mainstream. But that isn't all.

Just from that wikipedia article, you can see that a cult must meet a number of criteria to be a cult rather than a sect.

Here are a few:

- Becker's cults were small religious groups lacking in organization and emphasizing the private nature of personal beliefs
- Later formulations built on these characteristics while placing an additional emphasis on cults as deviant religious groups "deriving their inspiration from outside of the predominant religious culture".[
- Sociologists still maintain that unlike sects, which are products of religious schism and therefore maintain a continuity with traditional beliefs and practices, "cults" arise spontaneously around novel beliefs and practices

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Is whether you agree with their beliefs.***

Jan 7, 2013, 11:53 AM [ in reply to The only difference between a cult and religion ]

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

no, because not every new sect is a cult

Jan 7, 2013, 12:01 PM

and not every different denomination is viewed as a cult by other denominations.
