A moment in camp with Tony Elliott

Aug 7, 2021, 10:06 PM

I want to share a story with you, a story that has less to do with sports and more about family.

Yesterday's football practice at Clemson was your typically hot August practice. Everyone was sweating and trying to drink as much as possible, and about halfway through the practice head coach Dabo Swinney paused things and told the players and coaches to head to the refrigerated trucks and drink tables and tents to cool down. Everybody went, except for one person. Offensive coordinator Tony Elliott.

Why didn't Tony go? Because his wife and two sons showed up, and as soon as the boys saw there was a break they ran out into the middle of the field to play with dad. They had their baseball gloves and a ball, and Elliott, with a towel around his neck, made all the throws and catches with two little ones who were simply having a game of catch with their dad. Not the offensive coordinator. Not the coach. Just dad. I am sure he wanted a drink. To cool down. But some things are more important than our own comforts, and as a dad, I watched in admiration as he made his sons happy.

DJ Uiagalelei, ever the baseball player, stepped in and made some throws, and he looked like he was having as much fun as Tony.

Football coaches are people too

Some of them are also good people. Tony Elliott is one of them.

More reasons for why it would be hard to leave that kind of family atmosphere and work environment. Clemson is different. Special.
