A lot of us are Concerned about Ben

Nov 30, 2015, 10:44 AM

And I hope he heals up quickly. Dude is a freak beast when he's 100%. However, there is a lot of murmuring about him not being able to cover the back out of the backfield and I agree. However, Does he have to? think about it, We have a nasty d-line and nasty lb's. We run a 4-2-5 and from what I saw during the coot game, we are leaving lbs in the box more and more and using our nickle backs to cover the back out of the backfield. That to me makes a lot more sense. If nothing else, could we pull Ben for the UNCheat game and run a dime defense using the two rovers to cover the backs out of the backfield which will give him time to heal up for playoffs. I will admit I have not paid attention to any UNCheat games so I'm not sure how much of a factor that is, but it could be an option. What are your thoughts.

My thoughts are, BV knows his defense and weaknesses better than we do. He knows who the leaders are. He knows who has missed a play, taken plays off, who hasn't. He has been a part of 15 wins in a row. I say, trust BV to put us in the best position to win this game. Boulware is a playmaker, he's made some huge stops when we've needed them. He is human of course. I imagine BV knows if we have a more talented player or not, and I trust his judgment. I felt like our defense was doing pretty well on Saturday, made a key interception instead of letting score, held to a field goal. I think our turnovers had more to do with the final score than the play of our defense. And, I don't want to make excuses, guess I will, but Gallman was perhaps a little rusty. I bet he protects the ball much better this week. I think we are the superior team on both sides of the ball and we do what it takes to win this game. I'd love to see another 56-0 effort. But, I for one will be as happy if UNC walks away saying, we were one play from winning that game. As long as we win! Go Tigers! We have a one game season now and then some time off before our next season starts!

So you would keep the 4-2-5 with the nickle taking the flats/bubble routes from the RB?

I'll also point out that 10 straight weeks don't leave a lot of time to change his blitz disguises and give the opponent lots of film. If we pull off the win this week I expect a fully rested and completely unpredictable defense to swarm the playoffs.

I think we can and we are changing certain parts of our D. Athletes like we have can learn quickly. I don't really see a need to change the entire foundation of the D. Different blitz packages yes. But things like that can be picked up quickly by athletes at this level. I think what is keeping BV from doing so is how mentally worn out our guys are.

I don't think they need to change the packages just change the disguises. Both big slant route gains against South Carolina came on corner blitzes. Either they were really lucky or they read them all the way.

I could be completely wrong, but the whole idea of a corner

blitz when the strength of your secondary is your CBs in coverage, and the weakness is safeties being out of position and blowing assignments just seems foolish.

I get that we want to mix up our coverages and be aggressive and less predictable, but i feel like the damage from getting torched for huge gains and quick TDs is worse than maybe giving up a few moderate gains in the passing game from lack of pressure on the QB when we drop more guys in coverage.

I agree with this. It's an all or nothing type play. Either the CB gets there and disrupts/sacks the QB or you open up the slants for massive gains. It would probably be better to blitz our safeties if we are sending a secondary defender and leave the CB alone.

Don't lose sight of the fact that this has been overall a very effective defense. I know as fans we get worked up when we see what looks like a simple play or busted coverage surrender big yards. But this team plays, on both sides of the ball, at a brisk pace. In some ways I think the gamble of giving up the big play is strategic. You're either backing the other team up and getting off the field or they're moving in big chunks. Either leaves the team relatively fresh for when it counts - like the incredible 4th down stop against Dalvin Cook. If we'd been grinding out 8+ play defensive possessions all day we would not have been in the shape we were in. The turnovers against SC forced the defense on the field even more than usual too.

We just have to get past this game.

I don't care if we win by 1 point. Just win baby! Then the boys can rest for a few weeks and get ready for who ever. The good news is we match up super well with more traditional, pro style teams such as Alabama, Stanford, Ok. I will admit NC scares me a bit with their offense, but in the end, out defense sees a better offense every day, and while their defense is better, I think LV, NC St, BC and yes, even the ##### are better. As long as we playback clean, no turnover game and kick coverage is good, we win this game.

Mainly because the offense can easily do a hard count to show the blitz then audible to a quick slant.
