A lot has changed in 5 years.

In 2018, we beat FSU 59-10. That year, we finished 15-0, culminating in a 44-16 drubbing of Alabama to win our second national championship in 3 years.

In 2019, we also dominated FSU, beating them 45-14. We made the playoffs again that year, but lost to LSU in the national championship by 17 points. We had already started slipping ever so slightly.

In 2020, we did not play FSU due to COVID. We made the playoffs again but lost to Ohio State 49-28. We continued slipping some, but it was subtle.

In 2021, we beat FSU 30-20. They were competitive against us for the first time in a while. We continued our slide, missing the playoffs for the first time in many years.

In 2022, we beat FSU 34-28 in a close game. We missed the playoffs for the second year in a row.

In 2023, we lost to FSU 34-27. We are now 2-2 and will miss the playoffs for the third year in a row, while FSU is 4-0 and ranked in the top 5.

We’ve fallen a lot since that 59-10 drubbing of FSU five years ago. It’s sad to see.

Meanwhile, FSU has improved considerably in those five years. Our games against them exemplify their improvement and our regression.

I hope Dabo can figure it out, but I believe it’s going to take a significant overhaul of his coaching staff. We need better and more qualified coaches. We also need to be willing to use the transfer portal to address needs.

I'm with you on that. But I think it's too little too late. I've been saying it for over 2 years. But most on this board hated on me. Do you know how long it takes to be so good that 80% of the teams in the country are afraid of you and they have already lost the game before the first kickoff? We were being spoken of as a dynasty just 3 or 4 years ago. It was us and Alabama then there was everybody else behind us. Not anymore. Dabo was to slow to make changes. And still hasn't changed in the transfer portal. Florida State had a better QB, and at least one better receiver. And we got outcoached in parts of the game. Mainly the crucial parts.

The lack of player development is our biggest problem.

8

Sep 23, 2023, 4:39 PM

We still recruit really well, but are getting much worse results from that talent compared to our playoff years.

I don’t think we are evaluating recruits poorly. We have multiple 5 star recruits on our team, as well as many high 4 stars. We are more talented than almost everyone we play, but we don’t perform like it. That speaks to poor player development.

We used to be great at developing players, but now we are bad at it.

Re: The lack of player development is our biggest problem.

Sep 23, 2023, 10:33 PM [ in reply to The lack of player development is our biggest problem. ]

No. The problem is that we aren't getting the talent we used to get at two positions: quarterback and receiver. The reason we aren't is primarily because more of the Big boys (Alabama, Ohio St., Georgia, etc.) are switching to more pass-oriented offenses. That means we have more competition for elite quarterbacks/receivers than we did 5 or 6 years ago.

Sep 24, 2023, 10:08 AM

DJ and Klubnik were both 5 star recruits; problem is we keep hoping Trevor Lawrence comes thru the door which ain’t happening. The Chad Morris HUNH was still prevalent in 2016, after DW4 left the offense changed. The slower pace helped the D but the offense didn’t click again until 16 took over for KB. Once 16 went pro, this team has had ZERO offense identity.

Re: Disagree

Sep 24, 2023, 2:51 PM

You can't just go by stars. You have to go by the specific ability needed for your team. Uiagalelei is a good example. If he played for Georgia, where they have an elite offensive line and he can sit back in the pocket, he probably would be great. When he has to play behind a line built for a running quarterback, he doesn't have that ability. If we had Brice Young or CJ Stroud, it would have been a different story.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Cade was a 5 star recruit, widely considered the top QB in his class.

1

Sep 24, 2023, 10:14 AM [ in reply to Re: The lack of player development is our biggest problem. ]

We have had some very highly touted pass catchers in recent years as well. Per 247Sports:

-Jake Briningstool was the #3 tight end in his class
-Antonio Williams was the #6 receiver in his class
-Joe Ngata was the #6 receiver in his class
-Derion Kendrick was the #6 receiver in his class
-Frank Ladson was the #9 receiver in his class
-EJ Williams was the #13 receiver in his class
-Justyn Ross was the #16 receiver in his class
-Adam Randall was the #17 receiver in his class
-Beaux Collins was the #26 receiver in his class

The talent is there, they just aren’t being developed.

Sep 24, 2023, 2:46 PM

No, the talent is not there you can't develop speed. You can't vertical ability.

We have complementary players. These guys are good for what they do, but that's not what we need. We don't have anyone one the team with the vertical ability of Mike Williams. We don't have anyone with the speed of Amari Rodgers. We don't have anyone wirh the size or arm of Trevor Lawrence. You can't "develop" that.

Saying that FSU had a better QB is a bit of an unfair comparison. Travis is a 6th year senior starting his 31st game. Klubnik is a 2nd year sophomore starting his 5th game. They should be better at QB. And both had similar stats for the game.

We are still the top program in the ACC. Hell FSU had not beaten us in SEVEN years.

You sound like a #### fan.

Sep 24, 2023, 1:11 PM

I’m going by success on the field, and there is not really a case to be made that we are a top 10 program today.

Again, we haven’t finished in the top 10 since 2020. In 2021 and 2022, we finished outside the top 10. We won’t finish in the top 10 this year either.

Well, theyre called 'mountaintops' for a reason

2

Sep 24, 2023, 8:05 AM

And youve charted the slide from the mountaintop well thru the FSU lense.

Dabo's had a great run at Clemson. Mack
Brown had a similar run -- and slide -- at Texas but when it started slipping in year 16**, Mack hung em up.

I wouldnt fire Dabo because firing him strips the program down to the studs.

It'd almost be like giving it the death penalty, given how far behind they are in portal development and NIL programming.

Thats because Dabo built the thing, and only Dabo can sell it to recruits. Aint nobody got his charisma.

So you've got a Tiger (no pun) by the tail here.

Either y'all let Dabo decide when Dabo goes -- and watch the slide continue indefinitely while he grooms a replacement -- which I believe is Riley.

Or, ask him to step down and admit to the world the party's over. And watch donors gallop off in droves.

Either way, the days of CFPs and landing a passel of 4/5* kids out of high school are over after yesterday. FSU bodied this team. ND will too. And I think USC and maybe Miami will, too.

Therefore, given Clemson's position as the second (or maybe third or fourth) best program in the dying ACC, how long before they get back to the mountaintop will be measured in decades, if ever.

If I was Neff, I'd be looking at what USC is doing with portal/NIL and following suit.

Meanwhile, Dabo'll
keep greeting top recruits with an aw shucks handshake and a trip down the slide instead of sitting them down and going over a life-changing NIL package.

Sep 24, 2023, 8:45 AM

First, when you win 2 natties in 3 years - and have 2 of the best QBs to ever play college football - you just might take a step back. Lol.
Add portal taking talent from poor teams and moving them to flawed but talented teams and now you have parity. Bama, Ohio state, Clemson - the big 3 for years - none have taken on more than a couple transfers in the past few years (combined). Why do you think that is? They recruit solid across the board. Teams like FSU with massive gaps had holes to fill. They were horrible, now they are not. You think transfers will continue if their depth chart fills up? Nope.

We understand your motives by your post. You are simply crying about Brads failures. Transparent post.

So what coaching changes do you suggest? We just got the Broyles award winner from last year as our offensive coordinator. I question whether Goodwin can do it next year when the talent falls off, but the defense only gave up 17 in regulation to what is supposed to be one of the best offenses in college football.

The position coaches are important but I don't know if that would be considered a major overhaul. Austin and Spiller are fairly new and both position groups seem to be moving in the right direction. It is tough for me to see any position coach on the defense being a major problem. So is changing Grisham out a major overhaul?

We have had such a problem with injuries, that I do think we need to investigate if there is some conditioning issue, but it could also just be bad luck.

The thing that you don't address is that when we beat Alabama, the only direction to go is down. Yes we have slipped but there is not a big gap between this team and the 2018 National Championship team. We outplayed the #4 team in the country yesterday and lost because of a few poor plays. I do think that the coaches are largely responsible for several of the poor plays, but you do your best to learn from the mistakes and move ahead.

our assistant coaches are unqualified for their current roles.

Dabo never should have put the likes of Goodwin, Conn, or Grisham in their positions. It’s ludicrous that a program of our caliber would do that. Replacing them is the next logical move.

I agree that injuries should be examined more closely, including our S&C methods.

It’s not that we didn’t maintain our last national championship performance. It’s that we have fallen off precipitously since then. And it’s also how we’ve fallen; much of it could’ve been prevented with better decisions regarding coaching hires/promotions, being faster to adapt our approach, utilizing the portal, etc.

Fla St. has the same guy. And over 6 years he got a little bit better until they finally won. They will have their year then fall off for another 4-5.

We need a combination of recruiting AND portal players.

They need to us the portal to fill in the gaps. Maybe we find a decent 6'5" WR or a Tackle that can help to bolster the offensive line. Maybe even a decent kicker! Either way, we should be using all of the tools at our disposal including the portal. I understand Dabo wanting "Clemson guys" on the team. We need to keep doing that but think bigger and bring in a few guys every year off the portal to improve the overall performance of the team. Just my $.02.

Go Tigers!!!

While it may true that Clemson has slipped some from possibly one of the best college football teams ever that destroyed Alabama in the title game. It is good that FSU and some of the other ACC teams have improved considerably. It is better to have completive games than to go out winning ever single game by 30+ points. We have not slipped as much as other teams have improved. Give them a little credit.

We have slipped a lot.

It’s not because other teams got better.

FSU was in the doldrums then like we would be if Dabo left. They were terrible losing to Everyone. Why? Their Administration made some bad mistakes. If not for pay to play they would not be where they are today. Money has changed the sport and you have not seen anything yet.
