A little late, but, here are my pics from the MD game

Nov 18, 2012, 5:16 AM

What I have learned...3:30 games are freaking hard to shoot. The lighting is TERRIBLE. I was able to get a few good ones, though!

Here's the link:

I sadly wasn't able to get on the field today...I had to watch from the hill. I was happy to get to cheer, though!

You take great pics; is it just a hobby or part of a job?***

Thanks! It's only a hobby which is why it takes me so long to get them edited and posted. I actually teach fourth grade and am currently working on my masters degree, so I don't have nearly as much time as I'd like for photography!

Low light sports shooting is the worst you can get

Nov 18, 2012, 1:18 PM

Ms. Dabney knows everything I'm saying here so this is more to show others how great her work is without actually being a pro sports photographer. It's a huge investment most couldn't make.

The sun at 3:30 sucks at Clemson. It either blows your shots out or it's dang near dark depending on which way you're shooting. I shot a high school playoff last weekend and ran off 1,200 shots. I might get 100 good ones because of light. The Canon 7D you use is great for a crop sensor with the higher fps and extra reach a 1.6 gives. To move to a professional full frame you have to move into the $3,000-$6,000k range.

Unfortunately, you can't get by with lesser glass. A slow lens with the ISO cranked up just won't get the quality in bad light and with a 2.8 200mm you've still got to use your feet to get in position for the shots. There's a reason we're amateurs, enthusiasts, and semi-pro. Unless you're willing or able to throw out $3,000-$10,000 on a single piece of glass you can't compete with the pros. One of the guys I talked to at the VT game was shooting a Nikon D4 with a 2.8 500mm, $16,000, plus a D3 with another nice lens. I could buy decent car for one of his setups.

With all that said, you've got great photos, as usual. Did you shoot all of that with the 300mm? Thought about going part time pro? Check out borrowlenses.com if you haven't already. Big, fast glass to rent for a decent price.

You are so right! I wish that I had that much money to drop on some equipment. The best lens I have is the 300mm, and this is what I shot everything with. I have heard of borrowlenses.com, but haven't had a chance to check it out yet. Thanks for reminding me.

Thanks also for the super awesome compliment! :)

The thumbnail view is a pretty awesome way to recap the game!

Awesome photos again!! Love the various angles too!! Quite the talent for photography. How did you get pass for sidelines? I shoot a zillion photos at the games too but would love to shoot from sidelines just one time!! Any help with this?

Thanks! I am actually only able to go on the field because I knew someone who knew someone. The guy I go on the field with needed some assistance with carrying around his gear. When I wasn't being utilized, he said it was fine for me to take shots.

I was able to speak with a guy (a really young guy) who just emailed a company with some of his work, stating he knew they didn't have someone at Clemson to shoot for their company. They were so impressed, they hired him that way! I'm not sure how often that happens, but it's worth a try :).
