A coworker of mine who is a coot fan
Oct 31, 2016, 10:02 AM
|
|
Came in this morning with a big grin on his face. He was crowing about their "huge" upset over "numerous 18 ranked Tennessee". I know they are happy and I didn't want to be a dbag. So all I said was "No. You beat an UNRANKED Tennessee team. All that matters is the rank they get after the game is over in the new polls. So technically you beat an unranked team".
This is how I always have viewed it. Is this incorrect?
Example: we beat the 11th ranked Auburn team. Bc they are currently ranked that. Even though they weren't ranked when we played them.
That's my opinion how everyone should look at it.

I understand that point. But let's say Tennessee loses two more games and is unranked at end of season. Coot fans can still say they beat number 18 tennesse? Just don't seem right. This is how the CFP poll should work too in my opinion. They shouldn't worry about what auburn, louisville, and fsu were ranked when we played them they should look at how good or bad they were after complete season.

the 3 teams aforementioned, for those that care to play along, are top 25 teams. no way to slice it up any different. but you can try - go ahead, give it a try. i'll wait....

Its a rolling average. But SC beat a ranked team
Oct 31, 2016, 10:18 AM

We now know its a overrated team. Losing to SC was enough to make sure that they weren't ranked. Pretty much an admission of how bad SC is. It took 2 losses to A&M and Bama to drop them the same number of spots that losing to SC did.
If you look at any teams schedule on ESPN/CBS or any other it show the ranking at the time the game was played. Sure, FSU gets "credit" for beating a ranked Ole Miss team, but now folks know that Ole Miss isn't all that its cracked up to be.
Besides, injuries change a team throughout the course of a season. Doesn't change that you played and beat them at full strength.
What you are arguing for is to not have preseason polls and really a single ranking at the end of the year. Doesn't work that way.

Then how would one calculate strength of schedule? "oh they beat some good teams"?

Tennessee plays Tennessee Tech, Kentucky, Missouri and Vandy to end the season. They could easily win out.

I disagree. What about week 1? Teams are given random rankings. you have to let the season play out. All teams develop over the course of the season so wherever they end up in the rankings is how you determine how good of a team they actually were.
So we have beaten 3 top 25 teams thus far. IT will be 4 if Troy sneaks in the rankings which i think they will before the season is over.

Clemson uses ranking when the game was played

[ in reply to Re: Its ranking at the time you beat them ] |

They don't claim ranked Auburn and they say 3rd ranked Louisville. You will also see some schools that will add stats for postseason rankings or X-Y against teams that finished the season ranked.
Here's a Clemson season summary for 2013 (guess they didn't do similar ones for 14 and 15). You'll see 2 stats
"Clemson defeated two top 10 teams this year, #5 Georgia to open the season and #6 Ohio State to end the season. It is just the second time Clemson has had two top 10 wins in the same year since 1981. Tigers also did that in 2011."
Georgia ended the season unranked and 8-5
"Clemson has defeated three top 10 teams in its last 14 games."
LSU (#8), UGA (#5) and Ohio State (#6)
LSU ended the season 14th UGA unranked Ohio State 12th.

wait until the season has played out. But they still have multiple polls throughout the season so the same situation applies.

On the other hand, some schools stay the same as the season goes along but were ranked to high or low early. Therefore the end of the season ranking would be more appropriate in those situations.
i.e. Ole Miss was ranked at number 8 preaseason. The team that beat them when they were number 8 technically beat the No 8 team in the country, but there is no way that Ole Miss should have been anywhere near the top ten at the beginning of the season having just suffered their 5th loss. This time at home by 11 points to Auburn.

Disagree. Rankings are often wrong and correct throughout the year as teams post actual results on the field.
Current ranking reflects those corrections.

I would say that they beat #18 TN. When you go back to calculate how many ranked opponents we played you see their ranking at that time, not their present standing. For instance, when we win the national championship against #1 Alabama/Michigan; we don't say we beat the number two team in the country. We say we beat the best team in CFB and took that #1 spot. Can't believe I'm having to explain this but whatever...

But to be fair we put up tombstones based on the ranking at the time we play the game.
Of course in discussion later on you can give more/less credit to particular wins based on ow the team performed both before and after they lost to your/their team, but they won the game Saturday and while Tenn is not a world-beater this year I see no problem with the gamecocks enjoying the limited success they've seen this season.

imo, if just talking about a specific game, then it's the ranking at the time of game. If talking about the season, then it's the most updated rankings. So I'd say SC beat a ranked Tennessee, but they haven't beaten any ranked teams this season, even though that sounds weird.
