Also if I remember correctly Clemson was # 2. This game was played Saturday before Thanksgiving and Penn State upset # 1 Pitt the following Black Friday which moved Clemson to 1. Is that right?
I was out Black Friday shopping with my parents at Sears or somewhere in Greenville and watching the end of the PSU/Pitt Game in the TV department with a bunch of Clemson fans gathered around cheering. Good times.

Yes, Clemson was #2, but I'm pretty sure it was Pittsburg that upset #1 Penn State that day. I remember the results were announced during a HQs USAFE (US Air Force, Europe) holiday party/dance I was attending at the Ramstein Air Base Officer's Club in Germany . I was totally surprised that the large Air Force crowd cheered enthusiastically because it meant Clemson (versus Penn State) would be #1, and would be playing for the National Championship! I think the unexpected support (at least to me) for our Clemson Tigers was more to support the underdog Clemson program versus the highly touted Penn State program!
Great memories for me! Little Ole Clemson was enthusiastically supported by my fellow USAFE officers during our first National Championship season!

Pretty fun watching action from the 80s. Very quick decisions by the refs. Clemson fumbles. Quick call the coots have possession. Clemson stands up with the ball in hand but the call is made. No views to see who really recovered and the game moves on.
